After the San Diego Padres swept the Chicago Cubs in the National League wild-card series, Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer called the season a missed opportunity and said he was responsible for the bullpen’s shortcomings. TheScore’s report says Chicago was outscored 12-1 in the series, despite entering it after a regular season with a reported plus-147 run differential.
What Hoyer said about the Cubs’ playoff exit
Hoyer said the organization believed in the team and had stretches when it looked capable of being dominant, but ultimately fell short. TheScore attributed this statement to Hoyer, citing Cubs Daily:
“We believed in this group. We had the best player in baseball, we had an exceptional position-playing group. We believed in this group, and we fell short. We let that opportunity slip away, and I think that’s the part that will gnaw at us for a long time.”

How the short series contrasted with the regular season
TheScore reported that San Diego swept Chicago in the NL wild-card series and outscored the Cubs 12-1. The same report gives Chicago a plus-147 regular-season run differential. Those figures describe different spans of play: one is the entire regular season’s margin between runs scored and allowed; the other is the scoring margin across the playoff series. The gap helps explain why Hoyer described the exit as an opportunity the team let slip away, but it does not by itself establish why the Cubs lost.
Hoyer said the bullpen needs offseason attention
Hoyer accepted responsibility for the bullpen and said the club would seek to improve it in the offseason. TheScore attributes this remark to Hoyer, citing Cubs Zone:

He also said: “I take responsibility for that, and it’s something we’ll look to improve on this offseason because it didn’t work out as well as it did in ’25.” The available report does not provide a detailed breakdown of individual relievers or specific roster plans.

What is confirmed—and what remains unclear
TheScore’s report by Bryan Mcwilliam is the available secondary account of Hoyer’s end-of-year remarks. Its search-result text attributed the quotes to Hoyer and named Cubs Daily and Cubs Zone as the sources for separate statements. The original press-conference transcript or recording was not verified, and the report’s publication date was not visible. Accordingly, the quotations and the reported 12-1 and plus-147 figures should be understood as details reported by theScore, not as independently confirmed records here.
