CSR’s RadioPro was an OEM reference design announced in 2007, not a finished consumer radio. It combined CSR Wi-Fi hardware, multimedia processing and software with vTuner’s internet-radio portal, allowing manufacturers to build branded radios that could browse and stream stations over Wi-Fi without a PC.
What was CSR RadioPro?
RadioPro was a platform that equipment manufacturers could use to develop their own internet radios. Its reference design brought together CSR’s UniFi Wi-Fi technology, a multimedia application processor, software and a software development kit (SDK). Manufacturers could customize the interface and menus rather than develop the entire radio platform from scratch.
That makes RadioPro different from a chip sold on its own or a single retail radio model. It was a manufacturer-facing design intended to speed development of finished products with different enclosures, speakers, displays and controls. EDN reported the CSR announcement on November 8, 2007; Cambridge Consultants described the platform on November 12, 2007.
How did vTuner work in RadioPro?
vTuner supplied the station-discovery and browsing service. A RadioPro-based product could connect to the portal over Wi-Fi and let listeners browse stations by categories such as genre, geography and interests, then select a stream for playback. This gave manufacturers a ready-made directory and navigation layer instead of requiring them to assemble a worldwide station catalogue themselves.

At the time of the announcement, vTuner president Harry Johnson said customers would not need to configure stations themselves or pay a subscription cost to access the portal through the design. That was a statement about the 2007 offering; it does not establish current licensing terms or the availability of the service for new devices.
How many stations did RadioPro support?
Launch-era reports described vTuner’s directory as containing more than 10,000 stations, with CSR’s announcement giving the higher figure of more than 11,000. These are approximate catalogue-size claims from 2007, not a precise count for a particular finished radio or a current station total.

| 2007 source | Reported directory size | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Cambridge Consultants announcement, November 12, 2007 | More than 10,000 stations | Launch-era description of the vTuner service included with the design. |
| CSR announcement reported by EDN, November 8, 2007 | More than 11,000 stations | A second launch-era estimate; the difference supports treating the catalogue size as approximate. |
Could a RadioPro internet radio work without a PC?
Yes. The reports described a standalone appliance that streamed internet radio directly over Wi-Fi. A listener could connect the radio to a wireless network, browse the portal and play a station without keeping a computer connected to it. The available launch coverage describes that operating model, but does not provide independent user-testing results or measurements of reliability.

What did the reference design include, and what did it promise?
RadioPro combined the Wi-Fi and multimedia hardware with software intended for a finished radio product. Cambridge Consultants said the SDK supported customization of the user interface and menus, and that software could be upgraded automatically over Wi-Fi. Another launch-era report described support for WEP, WPA, WPA2 and Wi-Fi Protected Setup; those were period specifications and do not demonstrate compatibility with current routers or security expectations.

| Published figure | Qualification |
|---|---|
| Bill of materials below $15 | Launch-era RadioPro design estimate reported in CSR and industry coverage in 2007; it is not a retail price and does not establish a finished radio’s total cost. |
| Up to 25 hours of streaming on a 1500mAh battery | Cambridge Consultants’ 2007 maximum runtime claim for active streaming; actual runtime would depend on the implementation and operating conditions, which were not detailed in the report. |
The low-cost and low-power figures were part of the design’s pitch to manufacturers. They should be read as published platform claims, not as independently verified results for every RadioPro-based product.
Why did embedding vTuner matter to manufacturers?
Wi-Fi alone does not make an internet radio easy to use. A product also needs a way to find stations, organize choices, select streams and present navigation on a small display or through physical controls. Integrating vTuner gave RadioPro manufacturers that content and browsing layer alongside the playback platform. They could focus more of their product work on the parts that distinguish one radio from another, such as its sound system, industrial design and user interface.

What is known about RadioPro today?
The cited announcements and reports establish what CSR and its partners described in 2007. They do not establish whether RadioPro remains available for licensing, whether an organization now offers the reference design, or whether vTuner is accepting integrations for new embedded devices. RadioPro should therefore be understood as a historical reference design, not assumed to be a currently purchasable radio or an available platform.
