Crypto market capitalization estimates the value of an asset or market at current prices; Bitcoin dominance shows Bitcoin’s percentage share of a provider-defined crypto market. Market cap is an absolute valuation estimate, while dominance is a relative measure. Neither tells you how much cash entered crypto or predicts what prices will do next.
What is crypto market capitalization?
For an individual asset, market capitalization—often shortened to market cap—is calculated by multiplying its current price by the supply quantity used by the data provider, usually circulating supply:
Market cap = current price × circulating supply
If a token is priced at $2 and a provider counts 10 million units as circulating, its calculated market cap is $20 million. That figure is an estimate based on the price and supply inputs, not a count of dollars invested in the token.

CoinGecko says its global market capitalization sums projects it tracks; CoinMarketCap describes an aggregate covering assets that meet its requirements. Because coverage and supply estimates can differ, providers can report different total-market caps. See CoinGecko’s methodology and CoinMarketCap’s aggregate methodology.

What is Bitcoin dominance?
Bitcoin dominance, often shown as BTC dominance or BTC.D, is Bitcoin’s market cap as a percentage of the provider’s total crypto market cap:
Bitcoin dominance = Bitcoin market cap ÷ total crypto market cap × 100
Rank #2
If Bitcoin accounts for $600 billion of a provider’s $2 trillion tracked market, its dominance reading is 30%. That percentage describes Bitcoin’s share of the measured market, not the direction or size of cash flows between Bitcoin and other assets. CoinGecko and CoinMarketCap define dominance as a relative share; the denominator depends on each provider’s market coverage. See CoinGecko’s Bitcoin dominance chart and CoinMarketCap’s dominance definition.

| Question | Market capitalization | Bitcoin dominance |
|---|---|---|
| What does it describe? | An estimated valuation for one asset or an aggregate of tracked assets. | Bitcoin’s portion of a provider-defined aggregate crypto valuation. |
| How is it calculated? | Price multiplied by the specified supply quantity, usually circulating supply. | Bitcoin market cap divided by total crypto market cap, multiplied by 100. |
| What is it useful for? | Comparing estimated size or valuation at prevailing prices. | Tracking Bitcoin’s relative share and how that share changes. |
| What does it not establish? | How much cash investors put in or the asset’s future price. | Why Bitcoin’s share changed, whether money moved directly between assets, or what prices will do next. |
Why supply definitions matter
The supply quantity in the market-cap formula is a material input. Providers estimate what counts as circulating, and their methods are not a universal audited standard. CoinGecko describes using information from token teams and verification where possible; its approach may use block-explorer data for proof-of-work assets and deduct locked tokens from total supply for smart-contract tokens. CoinMarketCap describes circulating supply as its best approximation of assets circulating in the market and in the general public’s hands. The figures may therefore differ between providers.
- Circulating supply: An estimate of units considered to be in circulation or in public hands.
- Total supply: Units already created, net of burns under the provider’s definition. This can include units that are not circulating.
- Maximum supply: The estimated maximum number of units that can exist, where a cap is defined.
- Fully diluted valuation (FDV): A valuation based on price multiplied by a broader supply quantity. Conventions vary: an FDV may use total supply or maximum supply, so check which denominator the publisher uses.
CoinMarketCap’s supply definitions and CoinGecko’s market-cap explainer describe these distinctions. Do not compare a circulating market cap with a total-supply or fully diluted valuation as if they used the same basis.
Does a higher market cap mean more money flowed in?
No. Market cap is not the amount of cash invested. If the price of existing circulating units rises, the calculated value of all those units rises too; that change does not require an equivalent amount of new money to have been spent buying every unit. Market cap can also change when the supply estimate changes. CoinGecko’s explainer, updated April 10, 2026, cautions that “Market cap is not always an accurate measure of net cash inflow.” See CoinGecko’s explanation of market cap.

What does rising or falling Bitcoin dominance tell you?
A rising reading means Bitcoin makes up a larger share of the market measured by that provider; a falling reading means its share is smaller. Several things can produce that movement:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Bitcoin’s value rises or falls relative to the rest of the tracked market.
- Other tracked assets rise or fall relative to Bitcoin.
- The provider’s coverage or underlying inputs change.
The formula establishes the change in share, not its cause. A falling dominance reading is sometimes treated as evidence of an altcoin rotation or the start of an “altseason,” but dominance alone cannot show that money moved directly from Bitcoin to altcoins or establish that altcoins will outperform. To assess relative performance, compare prices over the same period and check that the market universe and supply basis are consistent. CoinMarketCap also notes concerns about interpreting market capitalization, including the effect of dormant or lost bitcoin; such concerns are reasons to treat market value as an estimate, not evidence of a verified current number of lost coins. See CoinMarketCap’s dominance definition and its supply discussion.

How to read a market-cap or dominance figure
- Identify the provider. A total-market cap or dominance percentage applies to the assets that provider counts.
- Check the supply basis. Determine whether the valuation uses circulating supply, total supply, or maximum supply.
- Match the time period. For comparisons over time, use the same provider and consistent dates; live readings can change.
- Separate valuation from flows and forecasts. Treat the number as a price-and-supply calculation or a share of an aggregate—not as proof of cash inflow, a direct transfer between assets, or a prediction.
