Crypto markets can now put prices on more than coins: tokenized claims can represent conventional assets, derivatives can trade exposure without transferring the asset, and event contracts can trade views about defined outcomes. But a price is not proof of ownership, a right to redeem, deep liquidity, or a reliable forecast. To understand what a crypto-linked price represents, start with the contract behind it.
What does it mean to expand what can be priced?
A market price is the result of buyers and sellers trading something under a particular set of rules. Crypto infrastructure can make additional claims or exposures tradable, sometimes across venues or outside traditional market hours. That expands the menu of things people can trade; it does not make every underlying asset easier to value or every quoted price dependable.
Three mechanisms matter most: representing an asset or claim with a token, creating exposure through a derivative, and trading a contract tied to an event. Each may display a price, but the rights attached to that price differ. A token might represent a claim on an issuer; a derivative might settle against a reference price; an event contract might pay according to a defined outcome. The governing terms—not the token’s name or ticker—determine what the holder actually has.

Tokenization represents an asset or a claim to it on a shared digital ledger. The IMF discusses tokenized securities such as equities, bonds, and fund shares, as well as possible uses in collateral and settlement. The OECD examines potential market-development obstacles and policy implications. Neither the ledger entry nor the ability to transfer a token, by itself, establishes that its holder directly owns an off-chain asset.

Before treating a token as equivalent to a share, bond, fund interest, or other asset, identify the issuer and read the governing documents. Check whether the token conveys direct ownership, a contractual claim, or some other right; who holds or safeguards the underlying; what redemption involves; and whether transfers are restricted. Legal treatment can depend on the product and jurisdiction. The OECD’s analysis of tokenization and the IMF’s April 2026 note discuss these market and infrastructure considerations.
Scale estimates also depend on what counts as tokenized. Binance Research reported US$31.4 billion in distributed real-world asset value in 2026, defining distributed value by assets transferable across wallets and integrated with broader crypto markets. The same report modeled tokenized penetration at around 0.01% of the total addressable market across five core asset classes. Those are the report’s definitions and model, not a universal tally of all tokenized assets.

How do derivatives create crypto exposure?
A derivative is a contract whose value is linked to a reference asset or price. It can let traders take exposure without directly owning or transferring that asset. Crypto market analysis discusses perpetual futures and options among the instruments used for this purpose. A perpetual future, in particular, is designed to maintain exposure without a conventional expiry date; its contract rules determine how its price is linked to the reference market and how positions are funded, margined, or liquidated.

Cboe’s June 30, 2026 article estimates that 2025 crypto derivatives notional volume was about US$111.5 trillion, compared with roughly US$25.3 trillion in spot turnover. Its estimate covers crypto-native centralized exchanges, decentralized exchanges, and traditional-finance venues. These are estimates of trading volume, not amounts of unique capital invested, open interest, or the value of outstanding positions: the same exposure can be traded repeatedly.
Cboe also argues that derivatives have displaced spot markets as a primary locus of crypto price discovery and risk transfer. That is an attributed market analysis, not proof that every derivative price accurately predicts the value of an underlying asset. Venue, liquidity, leverage, collateral, and contract mechanics all affect what a quoted price means and what can happen to a position.
What do event contracts add?
An event contract is tied to the outcome of a defined event. Its price can reflect what traders are willing to pay for a contract under its rules; it should not automatically be read as a reliable forecast or as a claim on the event itself. The contract definition and settlement source matter, as do the platform’s rules and the laws that apply to a particular user.

Coinbase Institutional’s 2026 outlook identifies prediction-market aggregators as a possible interface layer and mentions potential weekly volumes in the billions as a forward-looking industry view. That is not a measurement of current volume or evidence that event-market prices are accurate forecasts. Availability and legal status depend on the product and jurisdiction.
Where do stablecoins and tokenized collateral fit?
Stablecoins and tokenized collateral may connect digital-asset systems with conventional payments, derivatives, and financial-market workflows. The CFTC announced an initiative concerning tokenized collateral and payment stablecoins in derivatives and traditional markets. The IMF discusses collateral mobilization and experiments in tokenized financial-market infrastructure.

These sources describe policy initiatives and potential applications, not universal adoption or a guarantee that any particular stablecoin is suitable collateral. Whether a workflow works in practice depends on the instrument, participating institutions, legal arrangements, and settlement process.

Start by asking what the instrument entitles its holder to do—not just what its ticker or displayed price resembles. The same asset or event can be represented by products with different rights, counterparties, venues, and risks.
| What to check | Tokenized asset or claim | Derivative | Event contract |
|---|---|---|---|
| What is being priced? | A token representing an asset or a claim; the legal relationship must be verified with the issuer and governing documents. | Exposure linked to a reference asset or price; the contract may not convey ownership of the reference asset. | A contract tied to a defined event outcome; the contract terms determine what counts as settlement. |
| Ownership and legal rights | Transfer of the token does not by itself establish direct ownership of an off-chain asset. See the OECD analysis and SEC remarks. | Exposure can be traded without transferring ownership of the referenced asset. The contract and applicable rules govern the rights. | Rights and settlement depend on the product’s contract and applicable jurisdiction; a price is not ownership of the underlying event or outcome. |
| Redemption, custody, or settlement | Check whether redemption exists, what it requires, who safeguards the underlying, and whether transfers are limited. | Check margin, collateral, funding, settlement, and liquidation terms on the venue. | Check the event definition, resolution source, settlement terms, and platform rules. |
| Liquidity and access | Transferability does not prove that a liquid secondary market or reliable redemption is available. | Venue and trading conditions affect execution and price formation; leverage can magnify losses. | Availability and legal status vary by product and jurisdiction; a quoted price does not establish forecast accuracy. |
For an individual token or contract, these checks require its own documentation. The SEC’s Mark T. Uyeda said in remarks published May 12, 2025, “Market participants should not be left guessing as to how they can comply with the Commission’s rulebook.” That statement highlights the importance of regulatory clarity; it does not determine the legal status of any particular token.

Crypto is widening the range of claims and exposures that markets can quote and trade. Tokenized assets, derivatives, event contracts, and collateral initiatives each extend that reach in different ways. None makes the price alone a substitute for checking the legal claim, contract mechanics, redemption or settlement path, custody, venue, liquidity, and jurisdiction. The market can price an exposure even when the holder’s rights—or the limits on using or exiting it—are quite different from what the label suggests.
