Exchange APIs let developers access market data and account or trading functions; proof of reserves (PoR) gives users a way to check specific, time-bounded claims about customer liabilities and assets. Neither API connectivity nor a cryptographic inclusion proof establishes that an exchange is fully solvent. To evaluate a PoR claim, check what the snapshot covers, verify your own inclusion proof, and compare disclosed assets with the liabilities reported for the same snapshot.

What exchange APIs and proof of reserves can establish

An exchange API is an interface to a particular product and set of functions, such as market data, spot trading, or derivatives. It can support a developer’s integration with those functions; it does not independently verify the exchange’s assets or liabilities.

PoR methods address a different question: whether data about customer balances is represented in a published liability structure, and how that structure relates to disclosed assets held at a point in time. A Merkle inclusion proof can establish that a supplied record is included under a particular root. It cannot, by itself, show that every liability was included, that disclosed assets are free of encumbrances, or that conditions remained the same after the snapshot.

For that reason, treat “solvency” as a broader conclusion than any one API check or PoR proof can support. The useful evidence is bounded by the exchange’s stated scope, snapshot date, proof design, and supporting asset information.

Choose an API by product, region, and workload

Start with the official documentation for the specific exchange product you intend to integrate. Binance lists REST, WebSocket APIs and streams, FIX, and SBE; it says interface choice involves tradeoffs in latency, throughput, operational complexity, and client design. OKX documents REST and WebSocket interfaces. These are not universal, interchangeable configurations: supported functions and requirements can vary by product and region.

Documentation point What to verify before implementing
Product and interface Confirm whether you need spot, derivatives, account, or market-data functions, then choose an interface the relevant product documents. Binance’s developer documentation describes its interface families at Binance Developer Documentation; OKX’s current guide covers REST and WebSocket at OKX API guide.
Region and API domain Check the domain and regional requirements in the documentation for your account and product. OKX explicitly calls out regional domain requirements; do not carry a domain from one region into another without verifying it in the current guide.
Authentication and credentials Follow the documented signing and authentication scheme. OKX identifies authentication headers for private REST requests. Create keys with only the permissions your integration needs, protect their secrets, and implement the documented clock handling.
Rate limits and reliability Read endpoint-specific limits and reliability guidance. Limits can differ by endpoint, and OKX says some trading limits are shared across REST and WebSocket. Respect documented rate-limit signals rather than assuming a single global allowance.
Streaming behavior and test environment For WebSocket use, implement the reconnection, sequencing, and integrity behavior specified for that product. Confirm which testnet or demo environments the product supports; environments vary among products.

Do not copy a signing scheme, numeric rate limit, domain, or test environment from one endpoint or region to another. The live, product-specific documentation is authoritative for implementation details.

How a PoR proof works

Liability data and a Merkle root

A Merkle tree combines records into a root value and allows a verifier to check whether an individual record belongs to the committed set without needing to inspect every record. In a PoR system, the records may encode customer balances or liabilities. Binance describes its Merkle Root as “a cryptographic seal that summarizes all of the inputted data.” That statement describes the role of the root; the root alone does not reveal whether the input set includes every relevant liability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Binance says users can retrieve a Merkle leaf and record ID to verify account inclusion. It also describes zk-SNARK constraints intended to check that user balance sets contribute to total net account balances, that net account balances are nonnegative, and that a root update is valid. These are Binance’s descriptions of its own system, not a general guarantee made by Merkle trees or zero-knowledge proofs.

Published assets and additional proof methods

OKX describes taking a user-balance snapshot, placing balances into a trace table and encrypted Merkle tree, and publishing verification materials using zk-STARK proofs. Its published workflow asks users to compare assets in on-chain wallets with total account assets derived from the Merkle root. OKX’s official page cautions: “The report is a snapshot of our OKX account asset balances at the time of the data capture.”

OKX also publishes a repository with utilities for checking wallet address ownership and balances at a snapshot block height. Those tools can assist with parts of the verification process; the repository and its scope are described in the OKX proof-of-reserves README.

How to verify a PoR report

Use the exchange’s official report and account interface to obtain the relevant material. A successful inclusion check is one piece of evidence, not a verdict on the entire balance sheet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Record the snapshot and scope. Note the capture date and time, assets and account categories covered, and the proof mechanism. Check whether the report states exclusions or limits.
  2. Get your account proof from the official interface. Obtain your leaf, record ID, or other personal proof material through the exchange’s official account workflow rather than relying on a copied third-party value.
  3. Validate inclusion. Use the exchange’s verifier or inspect the published verifier, proof code, and file format if you can independently assess them. Confirm that your record validates against the stated root.
  4. Check disclosed wallet evidence. Where the method allows, verify address ownership using a signed message or another documented method. Check on-chain balances at the report’s stated block height; an address balance alone does not prove that the exchange owns the address free of encumbrance.
  5. Compare matching totals. Compare assets and aggregate liabilities for the same snapshot, matching asset units and coverage. Do not compare an asset total from one date or scope with liabilities from another.
  6. Keep a record of what was not checked. Note exclusions, unavailable ownership evidence, and any liabilities or asset categories the report does not cover. Do not extend the result to later dates or out-of-scope obligations.

OKX provides open-source utilities for parts of wallet ownership and balance verification. Their presence makes some checks more reproducible, but does not eliminate the need to understand the inputs, snapshot, and scope.

What PoR does not prove

  • Completeness of liabilities: A proof that your record is included under a root does not independently establish that all customers, obligations, or relevant debts were included in the input set.
  • Unencumbered ownership: A balance at a disclosed address does not, on its own, establish beneficial ownership free of lending, liens, or other claims.
  • Continuing control or later solvency: A snapshot says what the evidence represents at capture time. It does not establish control or financial condition after that point.
  • Coverage beyond the report: Assets, account types, and transactions outside the stated scope are not validated by a proof covering only the reported set.

These are limits of what the described snapshot and cryptographic evidence can establish; they are not findings that a particular named exchange omitted liabilities. OKX explicitly notes that its report is a snapshot and excludes assets outside scope and transactions after capture.

Why dates and methodology matter

PoR programs and publication schedules can change, so read the current report rather than assuming that an exchange still publishes the same materials on the same cadence.

Published example What the source says How to interpret it
Kraken, July 30, 2025 Kraken said its audit was finalized as of June 30, 2025 and covered BTC, ETH, SOL, USDC, USDT, XRP, and ADA, including spot, margin, futures, and staked holdings. This is a historical, exchange-described audit and scope, not a current claim about later snapshots. See Kraken’s July 2025 announcement.
Bybit report, October 22, 2025 Hacken’s report describes review of Merkle generation and user-balance reconciliation. It says the findings strongly indicate that the liability report represents underlying client balances while noting that absolute certainty is rarely attainable. Read the report’s method and qualification together; the conclusion is not a guarantee of complete balance-sheet solvency. See the Hacken report for Bybit.
Deribit, announcement August 27, 2026 Deribit announced that its daily PoR page would be discontinued from September 1, 2026, while independent PoR audits would continue twice a year. It described its prior system as a privacy-preserving binary Merkle tree. This illustrates why publication frequency and the current method should be checked as of the date you evaluate the exchange. See Deribit’s announcement.

When comparing reports, focus on snapshot date, covered products and assets, independence and scope of review, evidence of wallet ownership, and whether the method explains how liabilities are represented. A larger reported asset figure or more frequent publication does not, by itself, settle those questions.
