Crypto.com said unauthorized withdrawals in January 2022 affected 483 users and involved assets it valued at about $30 million. The company said its monitoring detected transactions approved without users entering their two-factor authentication (2FA) control, and that it restored all affected funds. Its public account did not identify a specific exploit or explain the full attack path.
What Crypto.com confirmed about the incident
After users reported suspicious account activity, Crypto.com described the event as a security incident. In details reported by CyberScoop on January 20, 2022, the company said its risk-monitoring systems detected activity on a small number of user accounts in which transactions were approved without users inputting their 2FA control. The disclosure establishes that unauthorized withdrawals occurred; it does not establish how attackers gained access or bypassed the control.
Crypto.com said, “In the majority of cases we prevented the unauthorized withdrawal, and in all other cases customers were fully reimbursed.” The statement was attributed to the company, but CyberScoop did not identify a named speaker.

How much was reported stolen?
Crypto.com reported 483 affected users and said the targeted assets comprised 4,836.26 ETH, 443.93 BTC, and approximately $66,200 in other currencies. CyberScoop described the contemporary value as about $15 million in ether and roughly $18 million in bitcoin, alongside the other currencies—hence the rounded $30 million headline. Dollar valuations depend on when the assets are priced, so the reported quantities and approximate values should not be read as a fixed current valuation.

What Crypto.com said about reimbursement
The company said all affected funds had been restored and stated, “No customers experienced a loss of funds.” These are Crypto.com’s claims as reported by CyberScoop, not figures independently audited or verified in that account. The report does not provide user-by-user reimbursement details or a separate accounting of prevented versus completed withdrawals.
What security changes did the company describe?
Crypto.com said it revoked 2FA tokens and revamped its 2FA technology. It also reported engaging third-party security firms for additional security checks and threat intelligence, and said it planned eventually to move from the updated system to “true MFA.” These were measures and plans described at the time; the 2022 report does not establish what controls Crypto.com uses today.

CyberScoop’s account did not identify a specific vulnerability, attacker, phishing campaign, credential-theft method, or other detailed forensic mechanism. The reported fact that transactions were approved without users entering their 2FA control is not, by itself, a complete explanation of how authorization occurred. The account also does not independently validate the company’s loss, reimbursement, or remediation claims.

What exchange customers can take from the incident
The incident is a reminder that holding assets with a centralized exchange involves trusting the provider to control custody and withdrawals, protect account access, communicate about incidents, and honor any stated reimbursement terms. When evaluating any provider or custody arrangement, examine:
- Control: who holds the private keys and can authorize withdrawals.
- Account protections: authentication methods and any withdrawal confirmation, delay, or allowlisting controls.
- Incident response: how clearly the provider explains what happened, what remains unknown, and what it did afterward.
- Reimbursement terms: eligibility, exclusions, limits, and the conditions that apply; a stated maximum is not a promise that every customer or loss qualifies.
Self-custody changes who controls the keys and transfers responsibility for securing them to the owner; it does not eliminate the risks of theft, loss, or mistakes. The CyberScoop report documents Crypto.com’s account of this incident, not a comparative assessment of exchanges or wallets.
