Both crypto-linked cards and conventional prepaid cards can be used for international spending, but neither is automatically cheaper or more widely accepted. The key difference is how the card is funded and when currency conversion happens: a crypto-linked card may convert crypto to local fiat before card spending, while a traditional prepaid card is loaded with money and follows the issuer’s rules for foreign-currency purchases. To compare them, check the exact card’s exchange rate and fees, ATM terms, eligibility, and transaction restrictions.

How funding and currency conversion differ

A conventional prepaid card is funded in advance. Whether it works abroad, and what it costs to use in another currency, depends on its cardholder agreement and fee schedule. Some prepaid cards permit overseas purchases or ATM withdrawals; others may restrict them or require identity registration. The U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau advises checking the agreement for those restrictions: Can I use my prepaid card outside of the U.S.?

A crypto-linked card adds a conversion question: when and how does the provider turn crypto into spendable fiat? It does not necessarily mean the merchant receives cryptocurrency. In its U.S. product description, Crypto.com says its card is prepaid, requires a top-up, and converts cryptocurrency into the market’s currency before it is loaded for purchases and ATM withdrawals. That is one provider’s disclosed mechanism, not a rule for every crypto card. Review the specific provider’s terms for conversion timing, rate, and any spread or charge. Crypto.com Visa Card

Compare the all-in cost, not just the conversion rate

A favorable exchange rate can be offset by card, funding, or ATM charges. For each card, check these costs and rules in the relevant agreement and fee schedule:

Visa Physical Gift Card $200 (plus $6.95 Purchase Fee)
  • Gift Cards are shipped active and ready for use.
  • This card is non-reloadable. No cash or ATM access. Funds do not expire. If available funds remain on your card after the valid thru date has passed, please call customer service for a replacement card. A one-time purchase fee applies at the time of checkout. No fees after purchase.
  • To access your card information safely, type the complete website address shown on your Gift Card (MyGift.GiftCardMall.com) directly into your browser's address bar. Don't use search engines or shortened versions of the website address, as these may lead you to fake or fraudulent sites. Do not provide any Gift Card details (example: Card Number) to someone you do not know or trust. If you believe you've reached an illegitimate website, contact cardholder service at 1-888-524-1283. Be cautious of phishing sites, there are a variety of scams in which fraudsters try to trick others into paying with gift cards.
  • To report your Lost or Stolen Physical Visa Card, call Customer Service 24/7 at 1 (888) 524-1283 to cancel your Gift Card as soon as you can. You will be asked to provide the Gift Card number and other identifying information.
  • Use your Visa Gift Card in the U.S. everywhere Visa debit cards are accepted, including online.
  • Purchase conversion: Find out which exchange rate applies, when it is set, and whether the issuer or provider adds a foreign transaction fee, spread, or other charge. The CFPB distinguishes international ATM withdrawals from international non-ATM transactions, which can include currency conversion and foreign-exchange processing. Regulation Z, section 1026.4
  • Funding and top-ups: Check whether the card accepts fiat, crypto, or both, and whether a debit card, credit card, or payment service used to add funds incurs a fee.
  • Cash withdrawals: Compare any monthly free allowance, the issuer’s charge above it, withdrawal caps, and the ATM operator’s own surcharge. A free allowance does not necessarily make every cash withdrawal free.
  • Eligibility and limits: Confirm that the card is available to residents of your country and check identity-registration requirements, supported countries, and transaction limits.
  • Rewards: Treat rewards as a separate benefit, not as proof that a card is cheaper. Check what spending qualifies and whether the terms can change.

Network branding alone does not settle these questions: issuer terms and the cardholder’s country matter. The CFPB’s general guidance on prepaid cards and its regulation on finance charges explain why overseas fees should be checked against the exact card agreement rather than assumed from the card type. What Crypto.com’s published schedules illustrate

The figures below are examples from Crypto.com’s U.S. and Europe-resident fee schedules accessed in 2026. They apply to the named provider, region, and card tier; they are not market-wide rates or a comparison with a traditional prepaid card. Because schedules can change, confirm the current terms before relying on them.

Check whether the card fits the transaction

International spending is not limited to ordinary retail purchases. A card that works at shops may be less suitable for hotels, rental cars, or other transactions where a merchant requires a credit card or places a deposit hold. Crypto.com says hotels and car rental companies may require a credit card and lists transaction restrictions and regional limits for its own card. Check the intended merchant and card’s terms before relying on it. Crypto.com Visa Card

A practical way to choose

  1. Confirm availability: Make sure the card is issued to residents of your country and identify any registration or identity checks.
  2. Trace the money: For a crypto card, establish whether crypto is converted before loading or at another point, into which currency, and at what rate. For a traditional prepaid card, check the supported currencies and foreign-purchase terms.
  3. Price a realistic trip: Add the expected purchase-conversion cost, funding or top-up charges, ATM fees, and any local ATM surcharge. Include the card’s free cash limit and withdrawal caps.
  4. Check acceptance: Verify supported countries and likely problem transactions, especially hotels and rental cars if you will need a deposit.
  5. Read the protections and changing terms: Find the agreement’s rules for disputes and unauthorized use; check whether rewards or other benefits may change.

Crypto.com warns that an unfavorable conversion rate can cause a financial loss and that a favorable conversion may have tax consequences. These are provider disclosures, not individualized tax advice; applicable tax treatment depends on the cardholder’s circumstances and jurisdiction. Crypto.com Visa Card
