CryoBio, a Central New York startup led by founder and CEO Murli Manohar, is developing a biological crop input intended to reduce frost damage. The company’s technology is still under development: reporting describes planned field trials and a forecast product release, not proven performance or a product available to farmers. In September 2026, CryoBio was named one of 20 finalists in Grow-NY; the report scheduled the competition’s $1 million grand-prize announcement for November 12–13.
Who is Murli Manohar?
Manohar is CryoBio’s founder and CEO. The edited Spilled Salt interview identifies him as CryoBio’s co-founder and CEO and recounts his earlier work at Ascribe Bioscience; CryoBio’s team page currently lists him as founder and CEO. In the interview, Manohar says his family farm in India suffered devastating potato late blight, an experience that helped lead him to agricultural science. The transcript says he earned a PhD at Texas A&M, later worked at Cornell, and co-founded Ascribe Bioscience in 2017 to commercialize crop-protection research.
These biographical details are the interview’s account. It also says Manohar has authored more than 30 peer-reviewed papers and related works; that publication count is not independently verified here.

What does CryoBio say it is developing?
CryoBio is working on a biological crop input intended to reduce ice formation and frost damage. In the Spilled Salt interview, Manohar discusses extracting and formulating molecules for application to crops, along with lab formulation and greenhouse testing. He also describes work on contract manufacturing to address scale and cost, and exploration of regulatory requirements.

In a September 2026 report, WBNG quoted Manohar describing the product as a small polypeptide sprayed on flowers ahead of anticipated frost. He said it works by reducing water’s freezing point. This is the CEO’s explanation, not an independent finding about how well the product works. The public descriptions give different levels of detail, and the available reporting does not establish a more precise mechanism.
AgNavigator reported on February 12, 2026, that the product was derived through precision fermentation. It said protection could last from several days up to two weeks depending on the crop, and that CryoBio was developing a seed-treatment version. Those are details attributed to Manohar and the company, not independently verified performance results. The company’s early efficacy statements should not be treated as established results across crops or frost conditions.

How is CryoBio approaching farmer testing?
Manohar presents grower involvement as a way to test the product under practical field conditions and build trust. In the Spilled Salt interview, he describes sharing greenhouse and small-field-trial data with farmers while acknowledging that results in an individual field are uncertain. He invites growers to test the product themselves rather than treating company data as a guarantee.

Murli Manohar, in the Spilled Salt interview transcript
AgNavigator reported in February 2026 that nearly 30 growers in New York, Maryland, and Washington were lined up for five-acre trials. Manohar told the outlet that the goal was for growers to test the product and report what they observed. The report described intended trials, not completed results. The sources available here do not confirm whether those trials took place or provide independently verified field-efficacy data.

What was CryoBio’s development timeline?
The timeline in available reporting consists of dated plans and forecasts. The Spilled Salt interview aimed for field testing in spring 2026. AgNavigator’s February 12, 2026 article reported nearly 30 growers lined up for five-acre trials and described 2028 as the expected product-release year. Neither source confirms that the planned trials occurred or that the forecast remains current.

AgNavigator also reported that CryoBio had raised $1.3 million in pre-seed funding. The outlet said the funding was intended to prepare infrastructure for the then-expected release, with production at gram scale and a planned move toward kilogram scale after another funding round. These were reported plans as of February 2026, not confirmation of the company’s present production or financing status.

What does CryoBio’s Grow-NY status establish?
WBNG reported on September 17, 2026, that CryoBio was among 20 finalists in the 2026 Grow-NY food and agriculture competition. The story described this as the eighth and final round of the second annual competition, organized by Empire State Development in association with Cornell University. It said the $1 million grand-prize winner would be announced at the summit in Rochester on November 12–13.
That report establishes finalist status as of September 17, not the competition’s eventual outcome. It does not show that CryoBio won, lost, or received a particular award. Finalist recognition is also not evidence that the crop input has been validated or is commercially available.
What farmers and readers should look for next
For a developing frost-protection input, the useful evidence will be transparent field results and practical operating details, not just a description of the proposed mechanism. As CryoBio progresses, relevant questions include:
- Which crops and growth stages have been tested, and under what frost conditions?
- What do replicated field results show compared with untreated plots or established frost-management methods?
- How long does protection last in actual field conditions, and when must the product be applied?
- What is the cost per treated acre, and what application equipment, labor, or energy does use require?
- What regulatory approvals and commercial availability apply to each intended use?
AgNavigator mentions traditional warming approaches such as candles and helicopters, but the reporting does not provide a controlled comparison with CryoBio’s developing product. It is therefore too early to claim that the spray replaces those methods or delivers a particular level of protection.
