Follow your treating clinician’s weight-bearing instructions first. For a knee injury, crutches are generally the more directly appropriate option of these two when a clinician recommends offloading and you can use them safely. A knee scooter is mainly described for foot, ankle, and lower-leg recovery; it holds the affected leg bent on a pad, so it should not be assumed suitable for an injured knee without approval from your treating team.

How to choose between crutches and a knee scooter

The right mobility aid depends on the injury, the position that is safe for it, your prescribed weight-bearing status, and whether you can control the device safely. The American Society of Pain and Neuroscience’s STEP consensus guideline recommends crutches after a knee injury for younger patients with good balance and upper-body strength. That is a qualified recommendation, not a rule for every person or every knee injury.

Ask your clinician or physical therapist which aid fits your diagnosis and restrictions before trying to walk with one. Cleveland Clinic’s patient guidance likewise says the healthcare provider determines which kind of crutches to use and for how long.

What your weight-bearing instruction means

Your clinician may instruct you to remain non-weight-bearing, allow only toe-touch or partial weight-bearing, or bear weight as tolerated. These instructions are not interchangeable, and the injury name alone does not tell you which applies. Clarify what you may put through the injured leg and which device will let you follow that restriction.

Quick comparison

Decision factor Crutches Knee scooter
Position of the injured knee Can help offload the knee without resting it on a scooter pad. Supports the affected leg bent, with the knee and upper lower leg on the pad; that position may not suit a knee injury.
Physical demands Requires balance, technique, and hand and arm support. Requires balance plus strength and control in the uninjured leg; it may reduce upper-body demands.
Stairs and route Can be used on stairs only with training and care. Do not use on stairs; steep or uneven surfaces are difficult, so travel slowly and avoid unsafe terrain.
Best-established use in the cited guidance Recommended by the STEP guideline after knee injury for younger patients with good balance and upper-body strength. Guidance primarily describes use during foot, ankle, or lower-leg recovery.

When crutches may be the better fit

Crutches are the more directly relevant of these two aids when the aim is to reduce weight through an injured knee, provided your clinician approves them and you can use them safely. They do not require placing the knee on a support pad. Their practical trade-off is that safe use depends on fitting, balance, technique, and enough arm and hand capacity to support your body.

Poor balance, weakness, substantial pain, or difficulty coordinating crutches can make them unsafe or impractical. Do not try to compensate by improvising your technique. Ask the treating team or a physical therapist to assess your mobility and whether another option, such as a walker or wheelchair, is more suitable.

Use crutches adjusted to you and get instruction in the technique appropriate to your weight-bearing restriction. Poorly fitted crutches or unfamiliar stair technique can make walking less safe. Ask your clinician or physical therapist to check your fit and show you how to move on the routes you need to use.

Why a knee scooter is not an automatic substitute

A knee scooter rolls while the affected leg rests bent on a pad. That setup is commonly described for foot, ankle, or lower-leg injuries, where supporting the leg in that position may be appropriate. For a knee injury, the pad places the knee in a flexed, supported position; whether that is acceptable depends on the specific injury and clinical instructions. Get explicit approval before using a scooter for a knee injury.

A scooter reduces reliance on the arms compared with crutches, but it is not effortless: steering and propulsion require balance and strength and control in the uninjured leg. Alberta Health Services advises not to use a knee scooter on stairs or steps. Slopes and uneven ground also make scooter use harder; keep speed low and avoid routes you cannot negotiate safely. Balance, coordination, or vision problems can also make scooter use unsafe.

What the available scooter study does—and does not—show

A 2022 retrospective case series examined knee-scooter use after foot and ankle surgery, not after knee injury. Of 196 people solicited, 101 responded (51.5%); respondents averaged 56.4 years of age, a BMI of 28.5, and 6.7 weeks of scooter use. These are characteristics of that study group, not estimates for all scooter users.

They do not establish that scooters are safer, more effective, or preferable for people with knee injuries, and the study was a Level IV retrospective case series rather than a direct comparative trial in knee-injury patients. The evidence summarized here does not establish that either device is universally superior for knee injuries.
