There is no single set of requirements, contract length or salary for every cruise ship job. For Royal Caribbean Group, applicants generally need to be at least 18 (21 for beverage-serving roles), fluent in English and hold a valid passport; role-specific qualifications, medical clearance and travel documents may also be required. Its published contract guidance spans roughly three to eight months, while its careers page does not provide a complete job-by-job salary chart. Here is what to check before applying or accepting an offer.
What qualifications do you need for a cruise ship job?
Requirements depend on the job and the cruise line. As a baseline for shipboard roles, Royal Caribbean Group lists age 18 or older (21 for beverage-serving positions), fluent English and a valid passport. Additional qualifications and experience vary by vacancy. Royal Caribbean Group’s basic-requirements FAQ says cruise or maritime experience is not necessary for many positions, where hospitality or customer-service experience may be relevant. That does not mean every ship job is entry-level: technical and marine roles typically require maritime certifications and experience.
Shipboard work also extends beyond guest-facing hospitality. Royal Caribbean Group lists areas such as human resources, IT, finance, medical, security, crew development and inventory among its ship operations support functions. Check the vacancy itself for the required credentials, duties and experience rather than assuming all jobs have the same entry criteria. What documents, checks and approvals might you need?
For Royal Caribbean Group, the list can include a valid passport, a company pre-employment medical exam, a criminal background check, qualifications for the role, a seaman’s book, and visas. Depending on nationality and itinerary, candidates may need a C1-D visa where applicable or itinerary-related visas such as Schengen. The employer may also require particular vaccines or testing. The company says the process from interview through embarkation can take up to three months, depending on the job. Candidates may apply directly or through an authorized hiring partner. Royal Caribbean Group says only partners listed on its site are approved to recruit for it; partners help source and pre-screen candidates, while the company makes the final hiring decision. Check its hiring partner information before sharing documents or paying for anything.
How to avoid recruitment-fee scams
Royal Caribbean Group says it does not allow its hiring partners to collect administrative, agency or processing fees from applicants. It distinguishes those prohibited fees from personal document and joining expenses that may arise after approval, such as a passport, medical exam, required certificates or travel to a registered gateway. This is that employer’s stated policy, not a rule established here for every cruise line. Confirm the relevant line’s official recruitment policy and approved recruiter list.

How long is a cruise ship contract?
Royal Caribbean Group gives an approximate range of three to eight months depending on position; another company FAQ describes most contracts as four to eight months. Its guidance says senior management roles are commonly around four months, while many other positions run six to eight months. These are broad employer descriptions, not a promise for a particular vacancy. Use the duration and any renewal, leave or extension provisions in your written offer and agreement as the terms that matter for your job. The Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) sets an international framework for seafarer protections, including employment agreements, wages, work and rest, leave, repatriation, accommodation, medical care, recruitment services and complaint procedures. The ILO says an agreement should set out or refer to clear, legally enforceable terms, including the seafarer’s capacity and wage amount. The Convention is implemented through relevant national systems, so the applicable rules can depend on flag state, national law, collective agreement, employer and contract. Read the actual agreement, not just a job advertisement.

- Job title, duties and the capacity in which you are employed.
- Contract duration, start date, renewal or extension terms, and termination provisions.
- Basic wage, how it is calculated, pay currency and schedule, plus any stated tips, incentives, allowances or deductions.
- Hours, rest arrangements, leave and any applicable collective agreement.
- Who is responsible for travel, repatriation, accommodation, meals and medical arrangements.

How much do cruise ship jobs pay?
There is no reliable, universal cruise-job salary chart in the cited employer information. Royal Caribbean Group says its employees are paid in U.S. dollars twice monthly to a prepaid Mastercard. It notes that some roles may offer performance incentives, but its cited careers page does not publish comprehensive salary ranges by job. Confirm the wage calculation, pay dates, tips or incentives, deductions and allowances in your own offer and agreement; do not assume a figure for one role or cruise line applies to another.

A separate ILO figure is not a substitute for a cruise salary chart. Following negotiations in 2025, the ILO reported a minimum monthly basic wage for the able-seafarer category of US$690 from 1 January 2026, US$704 from 1 January 2027 and US$715 from 1 January 2028. These are category-specific benchmark amounts, not predicted pay for hotel, entertainment, technical or officer jobs. The announcement is available from the ILO Subcommittee on Wages of Seafarers.

Royal Caribbean Group says it provides shipboard staff with accommodation and meals. Depending on position, a cabin may be shared, and the company describes cabins and bathrooms as relatively small compared with land-based accommodation. Crew amenities include social areas and a gym. Medical personnel are available onboard; the employer advises crew to join in good health and have prescriptions needed for the assignment filled in advance.

Time off and port visits
Ships operate for guests seven days a week, so a crew member may not get a continuous 24-hour period off. Rest, activities and port visits are possible when not on duty, but available free time depends on the schedule and responsibilities of the job. A port call is not automatically a day off.
Safety responsibilities
Each crew member receives emergency training and has an assigned emergency duty, which is practiced in drills. This responsibility is part of shipboard work, alongside the duties listed for the role.
What to pack
Cabin space is limited, so Royal Caribbean Group recommends packing only what is needed. It identifies clothing and toiletries as examples and prohibits hazardous items such as clothing irons, hot plates, candles and weapons.
