Micron announced Crucial LPCAMM2 laptop memory on September 30, 2025, with speeds up to 8,533 MT/s and capacities up to 64GB. It uses low-power LPDDR5X on a compact, replaceable module—but only laptops designed with a compatible LPCAMM2 connection can use it. It is not a drop-in replacement for ordinary SO-DIMM RAM.

What is Crucial LPCAMM2 memory?

LPCAMM2 is a compact laptop memory module format in the CAMM2 family. Crucial’s product combines that modular design with LPDDR5X, a low-power memory technology more commonly associated with soldered laptop memory. Because the chips are on a module rather than soldered directly to the motherboard, a compatible laptop can make the memory replaceable and upgradeable. Micron describes LPCAMM2 as designed for select next-generation laptops; its LPCAMM explainer provides an overview of the format.

What did Micron announce about speed and capacity?

Micron’s September 30, 2025 announcement says Crucial LPCAMM2 reaches up to 8,533 megatransfers per second (MT/s), with capacities up to 64GB. Micron said it was available through select e-tailers, retailers, and global channel partners at announcement time; that does not establish current availability or pricing. See the announcement for the product details.

What does 8,533 MT/s mean in practice?

MT/s measures data transfers per second; it is not a direct measure of how much faster every application will run. Micron says 8,533 MT/s LPCAMM2 provides up to 1.52 times the data transfer rate of 5,600 MT/s DDR5 SO-DIMM. Its cited PCMark 10 comparison covers digital content creation workloads such as photo and video editing and 3D content creation, plus productivity workloads such as spreadsheets and writing. That is a manufacturer-reported comparison, not an independent test or a guarantee of a 1.52-times improvement in application speed.

Will LPCAMM2 work in your laptop?

Only if the laptop was built with a compatible LPCAMM2 connection and supports the specific module’s configuration. Micron says its Crucial LPCAMM2 products work only with select laptops and names next-generation AI mobile workstations from Lenovo and Dell, but its announcement does not provide a precise model list. Before buying, check the laptop maker’s specifications or memory compatibility documentation for the exact model, supported capacity, and speed. A laptop with SO-DIMM slots or soldered LPDDR alone cannot accept an LPCAMM2 module.

Is LPCAMM2 the same as SO-DIMM RAM?

No. Both are removable memory modules, but they use different physical formats and connections. LPCAMM2 will not fit into a standard SO-DIMM slot. The laptop must be designed for LPCAMM2; matching the memory technology or finding a similar speed rating is not enough to make the module compatible.

How does LPCAMM2 compare with SO-DIMM and soldered memory?

The right comparison depends on the laptop’s design. SO-DIMM is a familiar removable format, while soldered LPDDR is fixed to the motherboard. LPCAMM2 aims to combine low-power LPDDR5X with a replaceable module, but it requires a purpose-built laptop. Micron’s current LPCAMM2 product page describes platform-level capabilities up to 9,600 MT/s and makes size and power comparisons with DDR5 SO-DIMM. Those figures describe Micron’s platform claims, not necessarily the specific 8,533 MT/s Crucial module.

Memory option Physical compatibility Upgradeability What to verify
LPCAMM2 Requires a laptop designed with an LPCAMM2 connection; not compatible with ordinary SO-DIMM slots. Modular design allows replacement or upgrades in compatible laptops. Exact laptop support, module capacity, and supported speed.
DDR5 SO-DIMM Requires a laptop with compatible SO-DIMM slots. Removable in systems with accessible slots. Slot count, capacity limits, and supported memory speed for the laptop.
Soldered LPDDR Installed on the motherboard rather than in a removable module slot. Not upgradeable as a memory module. Factory-installed capacity, since a module swap is not an option.

How should you read Micron’s size and power claims?

On its current product page, Micron compares LPCAMM2 with a commercially available dual-stacked DDR5 SO-DIMM module, citing volumes of 11,934 mm³ for LPCAMM2 and 32,808 mm³ for the SO-DIMM. Micron also claims up to 61% lower active power and up to 80% lower system standby power in its stated comparison context. These are Micron platform-level comparisons; they should not be treated as independently verified results or automatically attributed to the specific 8,533 MT/s Crucial release.

Does the ThinkPad P1 Gen 7 support the 8,533 MT/s module?

The available announcement details do not establish that. Micron’s May 7, 2024 ThinkPad P1 Gen 7 announcement described the laptop as the first to use LPCAMM2 and listed Crucial 32GB and 64GB modules at speeds up to 7,500 MT/s. That is evidence of early LPCAMM2 adoption, not proof that the P1 Gen 7 supports the later 8,533 MT/s product. Check Lenovo’s documentation for the exact configuration before purchasing.

Quick Recap

Bestseller No. 1

What should you check before buying?

  1. Confirm the form factor. Look up the exact laptop model in its manufacturer specifications or memory compatibility documentation and verify it supports LPCAMM2.
  2. Match the supported configuration. Confirm the laptop’s maximum capacity and supported memory speed; do not assume a module’s top speed will be supported by every compatible system.
  3. Choose the capacity you need. The announcement lists Crucial LPCAMM2 capacities up to 64GB, but the laptop may support a narrower range.
  4. Compare relevant performance evidence. Treat transfer rate as one specification, not an application-speed promise; Micron’s cited PCMark 10 results are manufacturer-reported and cover selected content-creation and productivity workloads.
