A CRT is the straightforward choice if you want a direct analog connection and the original display presentation. A modern TV can also be a good retro-gaming display when it accepts your console’s signal, runs in a low-latency mode, and—if necessary—uses a compatible scaler. Neither option wins every setup: latency depends on the full signal chain, while picture quality is partly a matter of preference.

How input lag differs between CRT and modern-TV setups

Input lag is not a single property of the screen. A console processes the game, a controller sends input, and the display may process and present the image. RTINGS describes TV input lag in terms of acquiring the source image, processing it, and displaying it; it also notes that the TV’s input-lag figure is not the latency of the entire setup. See RTINGS’ explanation of TV input-lag testing.

A direct CRT connection avoids the modern flat-panel scaling path, but that does not make every CRT setup universally lag-free. The console and controller still contribute to the overall response, and equipment or signal conversion elsewhere in the chain can matter. Conversely, modern TVs vary by model and settings; there is no single lag figure that applies to all of them.

Use Game Mode on a modern TV

Game Mode is intended to reduce display processing that can add delay. Some TVs also support Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM), which can switch to a low-latency mode automatically when used with a compatible source. Availability and behavior depend on the TV and connected equipment. If timing matters, confirm the mode is active rather than assuming the set enabled it.

Consider the whole chain

When comparing responsiveness, account for the console, controller, any scaler, and the TV. A TV input-lag specification describes only the display portion measured under the stated conditions; it is not a controller-to-screen measurement for your complete setup.

Picture: original CRT presentation or a modern flat panel

A CRT gives retro games their characteristic display presentation. A modern TV produces a sharp flat-panel image, but how it looks depends on the console’s signal, the TV’s scaling and processing, and any external video processor. These are different presentations, not a simple quality ranking.

A scaler can make analog consoles more practical to use with an HDTV and may offer visual options such as scanlines or masks. Those options can approximate aspects of a CRT look, but they do not make a flat panel identical to a CRT.

Setting up a retro console on a modern TV

  1. Identify the console’s actual output. Check the connector and video format produced by the specific console and revision. Do not choose a connection path based on console generation alone.
  2. Check the TV’s input support. Confirm that the TV accepts the signal and displays it correctly. If it does not, look for a scaler whose documented inputs match the console’s output.
  3. Enable a low-latency picture mode. Turn on Game Mode or the TV’s equivalent. If both the TV and source support ALLM, automatic switching may be available.
  4. Review optional image processing. Motion interpolation and other processing can affect latency or create unwanted image artifacts. Disable nonessential processing if needed, then check the result on your TV; menu labels and behavior differ by model.
  5. Match the scaler’s output to the TV. If using a scaler, confirm its output resolution and operating mode are compatible with the TV, and check the latency specification for the mode you intend to use.
  6. Evaluate the complete setup. Test the console, controller, scaler if present, and TV together. A display-only figure cannot establish the latency of the entire chain.

When a retro-focused scaler can help

The RetroTINK-5X Pro Video Processor is one option for connecting analog retro consoles to an HDTV. Its manufacturer lists support for formats including 240p, 480i, 480p, and 576i, along with digital video output, scanline functions, and mask controls.

RetroTINK specifies approximately 0.25 frames of latency in Framelock mode and 0.25–1.25 frames in Triple Buffering mode for the 5X Pro. These are manufacturer specifications for that processor and those operating modes—not an independent comparison, a whole-system measurement, or a guarantee for every configuration. Check the console’s exact output, required cable, the TV’s input, and the processor’s current supported formats and availability before choosing equipment. RetroTINK’s product range page lists other devices, but their compatibility and latency specifications should be checked individually rather than inferred from the 5X Pro.

Which setup should you choose?

Factor CRT path Modern-TV path
Signal path Direct analog connection when the console and CRT connections match. Use a native TV input if it supports the signal, or place a compatible scaler between console and TV.
Latency considerations Avoids the modern flat-panel scaling path in the display; the complete setup still includes console and controller behavior. TV processing can contribute delay. Game Mode or ALLM can reduce or manage processing; a scaler adds its own processing.
Image Characteristic CRT appearance and motion presentation. Flat-panel presentation shaped by scaling and processing; a scaler may provide scanlines or masks.
Setup Find a working set and verify that it has suitable inputs. Check console output and TV support, select a low-latency mode, and add a scaler if needed.
Best fit Players who prioritize the original presentation and have access to a suitable CRT. Players who prefer a current large display, convenient connections, or flexible image options.

Choose a CRT if its direct analog connection and presentation are what you want and the set has the inputs your console needs. Choose a modern TV if convenience and a contemporary display matter more, and verify signal compatibility and low-latency settings. A scaler is an optional bridge when the TV does not handle the console’s signal as desired.
