For a gym session mixing weights, jumps, lateral movement or fitness classes, cross-training shoes are usually the more versatile choice. Choose running shoes when most of your workout is treadmill or track running; for heavy lifting, prioritize a firm, stable base over plush cushioning. These are category-level recommendations, not the result of a direct shoe comparison test.
How the two shoe types differ
| Feature | Cross-training shoes | Running shoes |
|---|---|---|
| Designed movement | Stopping, jumping, cutting and changing direction. | Repeated forward motion. |
| Cushioning and feel | Generally built for a stable, versatile feel across varied exercises. | Commonly have more cushioning for running impact; a curved sole and soft cushioning can feel less stable for lifting or side-to-side movement, according to Adidas. |
| Best fit for a gym visit | Mixed workouts involving strength work, jumps, lateral drills or classes. | Sessions in which treadmill or track running makes up most of the workout. |
ASICS sums up the movement distinction this way: “Where a training shoe helps with side-to-side movement, running shoes help with forward movement.” ASICS
Choose by the workout you actually do
Weights, classes and mixed training
For a routine that moves between exercises, cross-training shoes are generally the better single-pair gym option. Their design is intended to accommodate changes in direction as well as varied training movements. Versatility does not make them ideal for every sport: the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine describes cross-trainers as general fitness footwear and recommends sport-specific shoes for people who regularly participate in a particular sport. Heavy lifting
Look for a firm, stable base and less cushioning than a typical running shoe. Adidas recommends a flat outsole and wide toe box for heavy weights. Nike’s UK guide distinguishes a lower-cushioned, stable Metcon for lifting-focused workouts from the more flexible Free Metcon for dynamic strength training and HIIT; these are Nike’s product recommendations, not independent comparative test results. Treadmill and track running
If running makes up most of the session, running shoes are appropriate at the gym. ASICS says training shoes can work for short treadmill distances, but recommends running shoes for runs longer than a 5K to provide shock absorption. That is ASICS’s guidance, not a universal cutoff; regular longer-distance running is better served by running-specific footwear. ASICS AAPSM
Can you wear running shoes for gym workouts?
Yes, especially when the workout is mostly treadmill or track running. A running shoe may be a less suitable choice when the session includes substantial lifting or side-to-side movement: its extra cushioning and curved sole can feel unstable for those activities, according to Adidas. Match footwear to the dominant activity rather than assuming one type is forbidden in the gym. ASICS Adidas

What to check before choosing
- Stability: Does the shoe feel secure when you lift or move laterally?
- Cushioning and flexibility: Do they suit the impact and range of motion in your routine?
- Traction: Does the outsole feel dependable on the surfaces where you train?
- Toe room and hold: Is there room for your toes while the shoe still holds your foot securely?
- Your actual routine: Give priority to the activity that takes up most of the session, and use sport-specific footwear if you regularly train for a particular sport.
