In the United States, the quickest way to distinguish an American alligator from an American crocodile is to combine its snout shape, the fourth lower-jaw tooth, and where it lives. Alligators usually have broad, rounded snouts and hide that tooth when the mouth is closed; crocodiles have narrower, triangular snouts and show it. The species’ ranges overlap in south Florida, so location alone is not enough there.
How to tell an American alligator from an American crocodile
The comparison here is between the American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) and American crocodile (Crocodylus acutus). Snout profile and the closed-mouth tooth are useful clues; color and habitat can provide context. These are typical patterns, not infallible tests. The National Park Service notes that alligator snout shape can vary among individuals and populations.
| Clue | American alligator | American crocodile |
|---|---|---|
| Snout | Usually broad and rounded. | Narrower and triangular. |
| Fourth lower-jaw tooth with mouth closed | Usually hidden in a socket. | Visible. |
| Typical color | Often darker. | Often lighter gray-green. |
| Usual habitat and U.S. range | Primarily freshwater wetlands in the southeastern United States. | Coastal habitats in south Florida, at the northern edge of its range. |
The National Park Service describes the crocodile’s “narrow snout” as triangular and says its fourth lower-jaw tooth is visible with the mouth closed. The alligator’s corresponding tooth fits into a socket and is hidden. These teeth and snout descriptions apply to the two American species above; crocodile and alligator are broader groups whose members vary around the world. See the NPS profiles for the American crocodile and American alligator.
Where American alligators and crocodiles live
American alligators: southeastern U.S. wetlands
American alligators range across the southeastern United States. They primarily inhabit freshwater swamps, marshes, rivers, lakes, and smaller water bodies. They can tolerate some salinity for limited periods and occasionally occur in brackish mangrove areas, so brackish water does not rule out an alligator.

American crocodiles: coastal south Florida and the American tropics
American crocodiles live in coastal south Florida and across parts of the Caribbean, Mexico, Central America, and northern South America. The NPS species profile describes their range on Cuba, Jamaica, and Hispaniola; along both coasts of southern Mexico and Central America; and south to Ecuador on the Pacific side and Venezuela on the Atlantic side. They are associated with coastal, brackish, and saltwater habitats.
Where their ranges overlap
South Florida is the only U.S. region where these two native species coexist, according to the National Park Service. In that area, habitat and location may not settle an identification; use multiple broad cues instead. The NPS overview of Everglades reptiles provides additional context.

Use clues without approaching wildlife
Do not get close to inspect an animal’s teeth or snout. Park guidance is to stay back and not feed or touch wildlife. The Everglades National Park visitor FAQ puts it this way: “stay back 20′, don’t feed or touch, if it moves = you are too close.” Follow posted park guidance and observe from a safe distance. See the National Park Service Big Cypress frequently asked questions and Everglades visitor FAQ.
How many crocodilian species are there?
Alligators and crocodiles are related members of the crocodilian order, but they are distinct animals. The National Park Service gives a worldwide total of 23 living crocodilian species (accessed 2026). The physical and habitat comparisons in this guide are specifically about the American alligator and American crocodile, not every species in either group.
