Crittercam is National Geographic’s name for a family of custom camera systems researchers attach to wild animals to study their behavior and surroundings. Depending on the project, a unit can record video and audio and collect environmental sensor data. It is not one standardized camera or a consumer product.
What is Crittercam?
Crittercam is a research technology developed around a simple idea: observe an animal’s world from a camera carried by the animal itself. National Geographic’s educational overview describes the systems as tools for studying animals in their natural environments. The National Geographic Exploration Technology Lab says the resulting audio, video and environmental sensor data can support research and conservation (lab overview).
The name covers different systems built for particular species and research projects. A unit intended for a whale faces different attachment and underwater-pressure demands from one used with a penguin or lion. National Geographic’s examples include monk seals, penguins, sharks, whales, fish and lions; they do not imply that one camera design works for all of them.

How does Crittercam work?
Researchers configure a camera and, when needed, sensors for the species and environment under study. While the animal carries the unit, it can capture footage and sound from its perspective along with environmental measurements. Researchers can use those records to examine behavior and habitat use that may be difficult to observe directly.

The camera creates its own short-range Wi-Fi hotspot (𝐍𝐨𝐧-𝐂𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫) for setup, and downloading files only. Wi-Fi range is up to 33–50 ft in open areas. The camera records automatically even when your phone is not connected. No subscription or monthly fees
- Upgraded Split Solar Panel Design: This trail camera features a Allows flexible placement design. Its angle can be manually adjusted to efficiently face the sun, regardless of seasonal changes or terrain. This greatly improves charging efficiency and minimizes sunlight blockage, making it suitable for all kinds of outdoor environments (32GB SD card included (pre-installed). No extra charge)
- Non-Stop Solar Power: Equipped with a high-capacity 6000mAh rechargeable power, this trail camera supports three charging modes: solar charging, Type-C charging, and rechargeable power. It allows for long-term continuous use. No more wasting money or climbing. It is the truly energy saving, and long-lasting solution for 24/7 backyard, farm, and deep-woods surveillance
- Easy & Smart App Control : This wifi trail camera pairs instantly via WiFi + Bluetooth with the user friendly “TrailCamGO” app, with a maximum connection range of 55FT (recommended within 10FT). Photos and videos can be send directly to your phone without removing the SD card. (As the wireless trail camera creates its own hotspot to connect with the phone, it does not support home Wi-Fi networks.)
- 4K & 64MP Ultra-Clear Imaging: With a high-resolution sensor and excellent low-light performance, this solar trail camera minimizes image and video blur or noise, enabling quick wildlife recognition and capturing every detail clearly.Ideal for birdwatching, spotting wildlife, and keeping an eye on your garden/home
The hardware has evolved. National Geographic reports that early systems used 8-millimeter camcorders in waterproof housings. One later sperm-whale system was designed to withstand 3,000 pounds per square inch of pressure. That figure describes a particular design example, not a rating for every Crittercam (National Geographic, 2018).
How are cameras attached to wild animals?
Attachment is tailored to the animal. The system must remain in place long enough to collect useful information without causing injury or undue interference, and it must ultimately be recovered or released safely. National Geographic describes suction cups used with whales, dolphins and leatherback turtles, and a releasable clamp fitted around a shark’s dorsal fin (National Geographic Education; Exploration Technology Lab).

- HARVEST MORE BUCKS THIS SEASON - EDGE 3 delivers real-time deer activity, movement patterns, and location intelligence—so you know when and where mature bucks are moving instead of hunting on hope.
- AI BUCK DETECTION + INSTANT ALERTS - Moultrie AI identifies bucks and immediately delivers high-resolution photos or HD video—reducing false alerts and helping you act fast when it matters most.
- NATIONWIDE 4-CARRIER AUTO-CONNECT - Automatically connects to the strongest of four major U.S. networks. No SIM cards. No manual setup. Reliable photo and video delivery—even in remote hunting properties.
- 40MP PHOTOS + 1080p HD VIDEO - Capture crisp, detailed images and lifelike HD video. Low-glow infrared flash keeps nighttime shots clear without spooking deer.
- 0.5-SECOND TRIGGER + 100FT RANGE - Fast trigger speed and long detection range ensure moving deer are captured cleanly—no blur, no missed opportunities.
Release plans also vary. Some systems are designed to detach after a set period or when the animal crosses a geographic boundary. The attachment and release method therefore form part of the project-specific design, rather than being universal camera accessories.

Animal-borne footage can challenge assumptions about where or how an animal feeds. In one Hawaiian monk-seal project, biologist Kyler Abernathy expected the seals to feed on fish around shallow reefs. The footage showed them traveling beyond those reefs into deeper habitats. Abernathy said, “It completely overturned everything I thought about how these seals hunted their food and caught their prey.” The observation changed his understanding of the seals’ hunting behavior; it should not be mistaken for a population-wide finding (National Geographic account).

Is Crittercam a camera you can buy?
No generally compatible consumer Crittercam is established by National Geographic’s descriptions. The systems are custom-built for research, and their attachments are species-specific. The name refers to a family of research tools, not a retail camera model with a standard manual, replacement parts or universal mount.
For current program information, consult the National Geographic Exploration Technology Lab. Its overview does not provide a complete, dated specification for every system in use.

Where did the Crittercam idea come from?
Marine biologist Greg Marshall conceived the idea in 1986 after seeing a remora attached to a shark. The observation suggested that a camera could be carried by an animal to capture behavior from its own perspective (National Geographic Education).
