Yes, you can start Critical Role with Campaign 4. It is set in the new world of Aramán rather than Exandria, and its first episode, “The Fall of Thjazi Fang,” introduces the story. Brennan Lee Mulligan is the game master, and the campaign rotates among three groups: the Soldiers, Seekers, and Schemers.
Can I start Critical Role with Campaign 4?
Yes. Critical Role describes Campaign 4 as a fresh starting point for new viewers. It takes place in Aramán, a world beyond Exandria, so you do not need to know the earlier campaigns to follow its premise. Critical Role’s Campaign Four announcement introduces the setting and format.
The story centers on war hero Thjazi Fang, whose suspicious execution draws people from his life together. The opening also introduces a world shaped by the aftermath of dead gods and a rebellion. Campaign 4 uses the 2024 Dungeons & Dragons rules; that is background for viewers interested in the game, not a requirement for watching.

Start with Episode 1, “The Fall of Thjazi Fang”. Its premise is the politically suspicious execution of Thjazi, which brings friends, family, and enemies to Dol-Makjar.
#1 Best Overall
- First major D&D adventure book within Critical Role’s world of Exandria, taking players from levels 3–12
- Multi-continental story that spans the scarred Wastes of Xhorhas, introduces the continent of Marquet, and eventually plunges players into the Netherdeep—a terrifying cross between the Far Realm and the deep ocean
- Bursting with lore and all new art depicting Exandria
- Includes a poster map of Ank’Harel
- Adds magic items, creatures, and introduces rival NPCs
The first four episodes make up the Overture: they establish the story and introduce the characters before the campaign settles into its rotating group format. Watching from Episode 1 is the clearest way to meet the characters and understand why their paths intersect.
How does the Campaign 4 format work?
Campaign 4 uses a West Marches-style structure with three rotating tables. Rather than following one fixed party in every episode, the campaign shifts among these groups and their perspectives.

Do I need the Dungeons & Dragons rulebook to watch?
No. The campaign uses the 2024 Dungeons & Dragons rules, but watching does not require a rulebook or prior knowledge of how to play. The 2024 Player’s Handbook is relevant if you want to use the rules for your own game; it is optional for following the show.
Is Campaign 4 suitable for all ages?
Critical Role says its shows are intended for adult audiences. Improvised role-playing can include themes or situations some viewers find difficult; the company suggests pausing or skipping a scene when needed. Its general FAQ does not establish an episode-by-episode warning list for Campaign 4.
