Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII- Reunion is a native Nintendo Switch 2 release of Square Enix’s action RPG remaster, with a story centered on Zack Fair. Its appeal depends on which version you already own: it is a fresh way for newcomers to play the remaster, but the case for buying it again as a Switch owner is weaker. TheSixthAxis reports a choice between a 30 fps-target Graphics mode and a 60 fps-target Performance mode at reduced resolution; those are the reviewer’s descriptions, not independently measured results.

What is the Switch 2 release?

Square Enix lists a separate Nintendo Switch 2 edition of Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII- Reunion. Its Japanese product page gives September 10, 2026 as the release date; the company’s Japan launch notice is dated September 9, 2026, so the calendar date varies by regional listing. Square Enix’s product page identifies the game as an action RPG for one player.

This is not a new story installment. Reunion revisits the PSP game, which Square Enix says originally released in Japan in 2007 and in North America and Europe in 2008. The remaster retains the prequel premise: Zack Fair, a young SOLDIER operative, becomes caught up in Shinra’s secrets. Square Enix describes Reunion as featuring overhauled HD graphics, a remastered soundtrack, a reimagined user interface and updated combat. Square Enix’s story and game details provide the publisher’s account of those changes.

Does Crisis Core run at 60 fps on Switch 2?

TheSixthAxis reports two graphics options: Graphics mode targets 30 fps with stronger visual fidelity, while Performance mode targets 60 fps at reduced resolution. These figures describe the review’s account of the modes, not an official specification or a frame-rate guarantee. The available evidence does not establish that either target is maintained in every scene; no independent Switch 2 capture or frame-time measurements are available here. TheSixthAxis’ Switch 2 review is the source for the mode descriptions.

#1 Best Overall
Square Enix Crisis Core: FFVII Reunion (Nintendo Switch)
  • Remaster of the original CRISIS CORE - FINAL FANTASY VII-, featuring a complete HD graphics overhaul, a remastered soundtrack, a reimagined UI, and an updated combat system.
  • The story begins seven years before the events of FINAL FANTASY VII (1997) and follows Zack Fair, a young and ambitious Shinra SOLDIER operative. Zack is tasked with tracking down a missing SOLDIER 1st Class operative named Genesis Rhapsodos.
  • But as his adventure unfolds, he discovers the dark secrets of Shinra's experiments and the monsters they create. The game features a number of characters from the FINAL FANTASY VII franchise such as Cloud, Sephiroth, Aerith and others.

The practical trade-off is responsiveness versus image detail. Players who prioritize smoother-feeling action may prefer Performance mode; those who favor visual fidelity may prefer Graphics mode. The lower resolution associated with Performance mode is the reported compromise, so neither option is simply the better choice for everyone.

Is the Switch 2 version different from the Switch version?

It is listed as a distinct Switch 2 edition, rather than merely the original Switch release. TheSixthAxis reports that there is no Switch-to-Switch 2 upgrade path and that save data is incompatible between versions. Because store policies and support details can vary by market, existing owners should confirm the listing and local support information before paying for the Switch 2 edition. TheSixthAxis’ review is the source for the reported upgrade and save findings.

The original Nintendo Switch version’s reviews can offer historical context about that edition, but they do not establish how the native Switch 2 release performs. A review of the earlier version should not be treated as evidence for Switch 2 frame rate or image quality.

Is Crisis Core Reunion worth it on Switch 2?

For newcomers

If you have not played Reunion, the Switch 2 release offers the remaster’s Zack-led prequel story and its updated presentation and combat on Nintendo’s newer system. The reported choice between a higher-fidelity 30 fps target and a lower-resolution 60 fps target gives players a way to prioritize image quality or responsiveness. Whether that makes it worthwhile depends on your interest in the story and action RPG combat, as well as the current price and format available in your region; the available official material does not establish a current price or physical stock across markets.

For original Switch owners

The purchase is harder to justify if you already own the original Switch edition. The reported lack of an upgrade path and save compatibility means buying the Switch 2 edition would not carry your existing progress forward. Consider it only if the reported mode options and playing on Switch 2 are valuable enough to you to start over; check your local store or support details first.

Square Enix’s Japan launch offer discounted the game by 30% through September 23, 2026. That promotion has expired and is not a current price; check your regional storefront for today’s price and edition details. Square Enix’s Japan launch notice documents the offer.
