Pearl Abyss Europe CEO Lybee Park has suggested that Crimson Desert’s critic scores trail its user scores because reviewers saw a different pre-launch build, had limited time, and tended to play the main story rather than the optional detail she considers central to the game. That is her interpretation of the gap, not a demonstrated cause. No controlled comparison in the reporting isolates review time from build differences, game design, or who chooses to leave a user rating.
The gap itself is visible in the snapshots available as of October 8, 2026. Metacritic’s critic Metascore was 77 from 115 reviews, while its user score was 8.8 from 13,492 ratings. Because Metacritic’s critic scores run to 100 and its user scores run to 10, the two are not directly comparable. Put on the same 10-point scale, the critic figure is 7.7, so users were rating the game noticeably higher.

What Park said, in her words
The most direct version of the claim comes from a interview with The Game Business, published October 8, 2026. Park said: “Critics had to play the build that is not the exact same version as the launch game.” She went on: “They also had limited time. Usually, the classical approach when they review the game is to follow the main story line. But our unique charm is spread across our in-game world. All those tiny details that are hidden. I am not sure critics had the fair chance to explore those during the review period.”

GamesRadar reproduced similar remarks in its own coverage the same day. In that version Park said both sides had fair points, and framed critics’ position as a fair one: “They had to play the build that is not the exact same version of the launched game.” She also described the game’s appeal as “spread all over our in-game world,” including “all those tiny details that are hidden” and freedom to explore “beyond the common expectations.”

The scores behind the claim
Two October 8, 2026 snapshots are the figures most often cited. They come from different pages and were captured at different moments, so they should be read as dated snapshots rather than live values.
| Measure | Source and date | Value | Population or basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| Metacritic critic score | Metacritic Crimson Desert page, accessed October 8, 2026 | 77 Metascore | 115 critic reviews |
| Metacritic user score | Metacritic Crimson Desert page, accessed October 8, 2026 | 8.8 | 13,492 user ratings |
| Metacritic critic score | GamesRadar, October 8, 2026 | 77 | Reported figure; review count not stated in the article |
| Metacritic user score | GamesRadar, October 8, 2026 | 8.7 | Reported figure; rating count not stated in the article |
| Steam lifetime reviews | GamesRadar, October 8, 2026, citing the Steam Crimson Desert Enhanced page | 83% positive | Lifetime user reviews on Steam |
| Steam recent reviews | GamesRadar, October 8, 2026, citing the Steam Crimson Desert Enhanced page | 77% positive | Recent user reviews on Steam |
Do not treat Metacritic’s 10-point user score as a percentage, and do not equate it with Steam’s positive-review percentage. They are different systems with different voters and different thresholds for what counts as positive.
Park’s three arguments
1. The build critics played
Park’s first point is that reviewers worked from a pre-launch build rather than the version players received at release. GamesRadar’s account adds that the launch-period game was a different and weaker version than the one available after later updates, and that patches can leave reviews out of date. Both points are the reporters’ and Park’s characterizations; neither article publishes a side-by-side comparison of the builds.

Fatal encounters will result in Zimri's consciousness being uploaded into a new cloned body, ready to try again, with any upgraded stats, suits & weapon schematics kept to aid the next attempt to save the ship
2. Limited time
Park says reviewers had limited time with the game. The reporting does not state how many hours reviewers were given or what the review window was. Pearl Abyss set the review period, according to GamesRadar’s reporter, so the length of that window is a publisher decision rather than an unknown outside factor.
3. Main story versus hidden detail
Her third argument is about how critics spend their time. A reviewer typically follows the main story to reach a verdict, Park says, while Crimson Desert’s distinctive material lies in side content, exploration, and small hidden details. This is the most specific of the three claims, and it is also the one most dependent on which reviewers played which parts of the game. The reporting does not identify how much of the critic sample covered the optional material.
The counterpoint
GamesRadar’s reporter does not fully accept Park’s explanation. The article’s argument is that Pearl Abyss chose the review period, and that critical scores may have been lower because critics did not reach the rewarding material. The reporter writes: “I don’t wholly agree with Park’s assessment that Crimson Desert’s critical scores may have been lower because critics only saw the rainbow and not the pot of gold at the end.” The same article concludes that longer review periods would benefit everyone.

What the evidence does and does not establish
- Established: the CEO holds the view that review conditions and the game’s exploration-based appeal explain part of the gap, and she stated it publicly in an interview published October 8, 2026.
- Established: the Metacritic page shows a critic Metascore of 77 from 115 reviews and a user score of 8.8 from 13,492 ratings when accessed on October 8, 2026, and its release date is listed as March 19, 2026.
- Not established: that review deadlines, the pre-launch build, or any single factor caused the difference. No independent study of this specific gap was identified in the reporting.
- Not established: how the critic sample split between main-story and full-exploration play. Metacritic’s excerpts show different criteria. One reviewer praises world density, sandbox mechanics, and player expression. Another warns that players who prefer a streamlined experience, stronger narrative focus, or clearer systems may find the game frustrating. These are examples, not a survey of all critics.
- Not established: what changed between the launch-period build and the current version in detail. GamesRadar says the main story was patched alongside the Enhanced version and that balance, economy, quality-of-life, UI, performance, and bug fixes continued after launch. Confirm the current version before making specific claims about what changed.
Why critic and user scores are not a controlled test
Critic and user scores differ in several ways that matter more than the headline gap:
- Who votes: professional critics review under an assignment, usually with access to an early build; users rate after buying the game, often on their own schedule.
- How many: 115 critic reviews and 13,492 user ratings are different sample sizes, and user counts can change as new ratings arrive.
- What is measured: critics write a verdict on the whole package, while users may rate their own experience, including content they found after the review window closed.
- Scale: Metacritic’s critic score (out of 100) and user score (out of 10) are not interchangeable, and neither is Steam’s positive-review percentage.
- Timing: a score captured on one date may reflect a different version than one captured later.
How to check the numbers yourself
- Open the Metacritic Crimson Desert page and note the access date, the critic review count, and the user rating count.
- Check whether the critic and user figures refer to the same platform. Versions for different consoles and PC can have separate pages and counts.
- On Steam, open the Crimson Desert Enhanced store page and compare the lifetime and recent review labels, noting the date you looked.
- Look at the newest critic reviews and user reviews separately, and check whether they mention the version they played.
- Record the date and version alongside each number before comparing the critic and user scores.
Sales context, kept separate from the scores
Sales figures do not explain the score gap, but they show the game’s scale. Pearl Abyss announced on May 6, 2026 that Crimson Desert had sold five million copies worldwide, a milestone it said was reached on April 15, and that it recorded a peak of 276,261 concurrent Steam players since release. The Game Business later reported six million copies sold, with half on PlayStation and Xbox, in its October 8, 2026 article. That report does not explain how the figure was counted, so treat it as a reported number rather than an audited one.
Where the game is available
Pearl Abyss lists Crimson Desert on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, Epic Games Store, and Mac. Availability, edition, and pricing vary by region and store, and can change after publication, so check the publisher’s page and your storefront before buying. Metacritic’s page also listed Fanatical and Best Buy as purchase options when accessed; confirm those listings directly.
What this means for readers
The reviewing-period explanation is a plausible account from the publisher’s side, and it points to real differences in how critics and players experience the game. It is not proof that short review windows or an early build caused the lower critic scores. If you are comparing the two numbers, use the date, the platform, the review or rating count, and the game version for each, and read the critic and user comments for the specific criticisms each group raises.
