Laboratory testing has confirmed creosote in pollution found in a defined area of Blyth South Beach, Northumberland. Northumberland County Council says restrictions remain in place there, advises people not to enter the affected area, and says its advice against bathing in the affected section north of the Dave Stephens Centre remains in force. Check the latest council update and beach signs before visiting, as access advice and monitoring results can change.
Where the creosote was found
The Environment Agency’s investigation found pollution contained in a specific area of beach near the Hole in the Wall, where contaminated groundwater is seeping into the sand. The council’s 5 October 2026 update confirms laboratory testing identified the material as creosote. This finding concerns the affected section, not the whole of Blyth South Beach. Northumberland County Council’s update describes the location and current response.
What visitors should do
The council describes the public health risk as low, but advises people to avoid contact with water in the affected area and not touch anything, including wildlife, along the affected shoreline. Keep dogs away from the affected beach and water. Contact may cause eye or skin irritation; if you have been exposed to the water and feel unwell, seek medical advice.

- Do not enter the signed affected area.
- Do not bathe in the affected section north of the Dave Stephens Centre.
- Keep children and dogs away from affected water, sand, and shoreline material.
- Follow current council advice and on-site signage, rather than assuming restrictions apply—or do not apply—to other parts of the beach.
What is known about the likely source
The council says investigations indicate the likely source is a former timber treatment works on land beside the affected beach. It operated until approximately 1980, and historical records suggest creosote was used in its treatment process. This is a likely source under investigation, not a final attribution.

Monitoring and clean-up status
The Environment Agency has begun regular seawater testing along Blyth South Beach. The first sample in this programme was collected in the week before the council’s 5 October update. The council says results will inform water-quality monitoring and future decisions about bathing advice and access restrictions. That update did not publish numerical results for the new sampling programme.
The Port of Blyth has appointed specialist consultants. Partners have developed an investigation and clean-up plan and are assessing possible clean-up options. Site investigations must be completed before authorities can establish what work is needed or how long it will take. The council has not announced a selected remediation method or a clean-up start or completion date.

How the incident has developed
- Earlier in 2026: The Environment Agency responded to reports of oil-like pollution and a fuel smell. The council says officers did not find evidence of beach pollution during those earlier responses.
- 20 August 2026: The council reported preliminary sample analysis suggesting creosote contamination and precautionary access and bathing restrictions in the affected area north of the Dave Stephens Centre. It said initial water samples indicated the bathing-water site south of the centre was unaffected at that time. The council’s 20 August update records that earlier position.
- 5 October 2026: The council reported laboratory confirmation of creosote, the likely historic source, continuing restrictions, planned weatherproof signage, regular seawater testing, and ongoing investigation and clean-up planning.
What has not been reported
The council’s 5 October update did not state the quantity of creosote, measured concentrations, a numeric health-risk estimate, the affected area’s dimensions, or a clean-up cost. Its description of the public health risk as low is qualitative; it is the council’s risk communication, not an incident-specific numerical assessment. The contaminant is confirmed, but the historic works remains a likely source while the investigation continues.
