You can connect a Copilot Studio agent to a Litmus MCP server so it can discover tools and, depending on the server’s capabilities and your configuration, help explore, run, and monitor chaos-engineering workflows. First identify which Litmus product the server controls: the LitmusChaos 3.x Chaos Center and Litmus Edge are different systems with different operations. Then confirm that the selected server exposes a transport Copilot Studio supports. Microsoft documents Streamable MCP transport for this connection; its support for MCP over SSE ended after August 2025.

Identify the Litmus product before configuring the agent

“Litmus MCP server” does not identify one interchangeable API. Two repositories describe distinct product integrations, so check the repository owner, product, endpoint, tool catalog, credentials, and transport before you configure Copilot Studio.

Server target Product and operation area What to verify
LitmusChaos MCP server LitmusChaos 3.x Chaos Center operations, including experiments, infrastructure, environments, experiment runs, probes, and ChaosHub. Confirm the repository’s current release, supported endpoint and transport, authentication requirements, and exact tools and inputs for your deployment.
Litmus Automation MCP server Litmus Edge and Edge Manager operations, such as device, telemetry, and management tasks. It is not the LitmusChaos 3.x Chaos Center integration. Confirm the Edge product version, endpoint, authentication, transport, and available tools. Its README documents Streamable HTTP at /mcp and identifies /sse as legacy.

Litmus describes its platform as an open-source chaos-engineering platform with declarative experiments, steady-state probes, and Prometheus-based observability. Its site describes an MCP server for discovering, running, and monitoring experiments. Those capabilities do not establish that every Litmus MCP repository offers the same tools or that every server endpoint works with Copilot Studio. Check the intended product’s documentation and actual tool catalog. LitmusChaos

Confirm transport and connectivity

Copilot Studio supports Streamable MCP transport. Microsoft says MCP over SSE is no longer supported after August 2025, so an SSE-only endpoint is not a suitable connection target for this setup. The Litmus Automation README’s VS Code/GitHub Copilot example uses SSE, but notes that clients supporting Streamable HTTP can use /mcp instead. That example does not prove that another Litmus server—or a particular deployment—has a compatible endpoint.

  • Use the Streamable endpoint documented for the exact server you selected; do not copy an endpoint from the other Litmus product family.
  • For the Litmus Automation server, the README shows http://<host>:8000/mcp as an example Streamable HTTP endpoint. Replace the host with the actual deployment host and verify its current configuration.
  • For production, use HTTPS and confirm that the endpoint is reachable from the relevant Power Platform environment.
  • Check which authentication methods the server actually supports before choosing one in Copilot Studio.

Microsoft’s MCP tools and resources guidance covers adding MCP components to an agent. Tenant configuration and connector policies can affect whether a setup path is available.

Choose a Copilot Studio connection path

Microsoft documents two ways to connect an existing MCP server: its recommended MCP onboarding wizard, or a Power Apps custom connector. Both depend on the selected server’s compatible transport, endpoint, and authentication support.

Path Setup and schema Authentication and sharing considerations
MCP onboarding wizard Recommended by Microsoft for an existing MCP server. Enter the server name, description, and URL in Copilot Studio; the server supplies its tools and schemas. Choose no authentication, API key, or OAuth 2.0 only when that option matches the server’s configuration. Confirm tenant availability and sharing controls.
Power Apps custom connector Create a custom connector in Power Apps using an OpenAPI YAML schema, create a connection, then add the connector to the agent. Configure authentication and connector sharing for the deployment. The connector still must reach a compatible server endpoint.

Microsoft also documents a route involving an approved bring-your-own MCP server through Agents 365. Check preview status and availability for your tenant before treating that as a production option.

Add the server through the MCP onboarding wizard

  1. Open the agent’s tools: In Copilot Studio, open the agent and go to Tools.
  2. Start a new MCP tool connection: Select Add a tool, then New tool, then Model Context Protocol.
  3. Enter the server details: Provide a descriptive server name, a concise description of its purpose, and the verified Streamable endpoint URL.
  4. Configure authentication: Select no authentication, API key, or OAuth 2.0 according to the server’s documented requirements. Use an approved credential and connection model for your tenant.
  5. Review and add the server: Complete the wizard, then inspect the tools Copilot Studio imports before making them available to the agent.

Do not substitute an SSE URL merely because a sample client uses it. If the wizard cannot connect, first verify the server product, Streamable endpoint, network reachability, and authentication configuration.

Use a custom connector when you need that route

A custom connector is an alternative when it fits your organization’s connector-management approach. It requires an OpenAPI YAML schema and a Power Apps connection; it is not a way to make an incompatible SSE endpoint work with Copilot Studio. Define only the operations the agent needs, configure the server’s supported authentication, create the connection, and then add the connector to the agent. Verify availability and sharing rules in your environment.

Enable orchestration and limit the tool scope

Enable generative orchestration for MCP use. Copilot Studio receives each tool’s name, description, inputs, and outputs from the MCP server; these schemas help the agent select tools at runtime. Review the imported descriptions and schemas to ensure they clearly distinguish read-only discovery and monitoring from operations that can change a system.

  • Fully assembled for plug-and-play operation
  • Includes Raspberry Pi 5 with 8GB RAM
  • 256 GB PCIe Pi NVMe SSD (Pre-loaded with Pi 64-Bit OS)
  • M.2 HAT+
  • CanaKit Turbine Black Case for the Pi 5
  • Copilot Studio initially allows all tools from a connected server. Disable tools the agent does not need.
  • If you switch off Allow all, newly added server tools default to off. Review the tool list after server changes rather than assuming new operations become available.
  • If the agent needs MCP resources, the server owner must configure each resource as an output of one of its tools; adding a server alone does not make resources automatically available.
  • Check the applicable Power Platform data policies and connector rules as part of deployment.

The cited Microsoft documentation establishes MCP tool integration and orchestration. It does not, by itself, provide a complete recipe for calling MCP directly from a topic.

Put safeguards around experiments and other write operations

Copilot Studio’s connection to an external MCP server does not make the server’s operations safe by default. Microsoft places responsibility for the external server and its tools and resources on the connecting party. Design controls around the consequences of the actions the agent can take.

  • Separate capabilities: Where the server permits it, expose read-only discovery and monitoring separately from experiment execution and other write operations. Disable unneeded tools in the agent.
  • Constrain access: Use credentials with the least privilege needed, and limit them to the intended projects, namespaces, and environments.
  • Make environment boundaries explicit: Distinguish non-production from production in the agent’s instructions, server configuration, and operational process.
  • Plan approval for disruptive work: Require human review or the organization’s normal change-control process before disruptive actions where appropriate. Treat this as a design recommendation; it is not a claim that Litmus or Copilot Studio enforces a particular approval mechanism.
  • Handle credentials deliberately: Match the connection’s authentication to the server, protect secrets under your organization’s policies, and avoid placing credentials in prompts or tool descriptions.

Validate with a staged workflow

Use a staged workflow to check that the agent’s tool selection and environment scope are appropriate before permitting higher-impact operations. This is a proposed validation approach, not a report of an executed test.

  1. Discover: Ask the agent to list available experiments using the selected server’s actual discovery tool.
  2. Inspect: Review the target environment, experiment details, and relevant steady-state checks or probes before any run.
  3. Start in non-production: If authorized, run a low-risk experiment in a non-production environment using the server’s actual execution tool and inputs.
  4. Monitor: Ask the agent to check run status and probe results using the available monitoring tools.
  5. Respond to the result: Use the server’s documented tools and your operational procedure to stop, investigate, or follow up. Do not assume a stop or rollback tool exists unless it appears in that server’s catalog.

Litmus describes experiment discovery, execution, monitoring, probes, and observability, but the available operations and their exact names, inputs, and behavior depend on the selected server and version.

Troubleshoot the connection and tool behavior

  • The server does not connect: Check that you selected the correct Litmus product, that the URL is the server’s Streamable endpoint, and that the endpoint is reachable from the Power Platform environment. For the Litmus Automation example, verify whether the deployment uses /mcp rather than legacy /sse.
  • Authentication fails: Compare the Copilot connection’s authentication choice with the server’s configured method and verify any required tenant or server-side setup.
  • A tool is missing or unavailable: Check the server’s current catalog, whether the tool is enabled in the agent, and whether Allow all is off. Newly added tools default to off when that setting is disabled.
  • A resource is not available: Ask the server owner to configure it as an output of one of the server’s tools.
  • The agent selects an unsuitable operation: Review tool descriptions and input schemas, disable unnecessary operations, and tighten the agent’s scope and operational controls.
