You can create an AI podcast with ElevenLabs by two routes. In ElevenLabs Studio, GenFM turns a document, a web page or an existing project into a podcast without code. For developers, the Create Podcast endpoint of the ElevenLabs API generates a podcast from source content in a programmatic request. Both routes write podcast text and convert it to audio. The decision that matters most is whether you want ElevenLabs to write the script from your source material, or whether you already have wording that must survive unchanged.

Two routes, two different jobs

Route Where it runs Input Best suited to Access
GenFM (Studio) ElevenLabs Studio, no code EPUB, PDF, TXT or HTML upload, a URL, or an existing Studio project Creators who want a podcast built from source material Requires a paid subscription
Create Podcast API Your own application, via POST /v1/studio/podcasts Source content plus a model ID Embedding podcast creation in an app or running it as a repeatable workflow Audio generation is charged; see the cost section for the LLM charge

A third path, standard text-to-speech, is useful when your script is finished. It converts text you wrote into speech rather than generating a podcast from sources. The script-handling section below explains when to choose it.

Route 1: Create a podcast in Studio with GenFM

ElevenLabs describes GenFM as a way to “automatically create a podcast based on any document you provide.” The workflow below follows the steps in ElevenLabs’ GenFM help article. Read the script-handling section before you start, because it changes which menu option you should use if you already have a script.

  1. In Studio, choose Generate audio, then Generate a podcast.
  2. Provide the source: upload an EPUB, PDF, TXT or HTML file, enter a URL, or select an existing Studio project.
  3. Choose a host and guest pairing. You can accept the suggested pair or pick voices from My Voices.
  4. Select the model and the quality setting.
  5. Generate the podcast text.
  6. Review and edit the text. ElevenLabs’ help article states: “You can check and edit the text of your podcast before you convert it to audio.” Check names, figures and quotations against your source, because the text is generated.
  7. Convert the text to audio, then download the file.

Route 2: Generate a podcast with the API

The API reference describes the endpoint as “Create and auto-convert a podcast project.” It is the route to use when your application, not a person in Studio, starts each episode.

Setting up access

The ElevenAPI quickstart shows the basic flow: create an API key, then call text-to-speech. Store the key as a managed secret or an environment variable, and do not hard-code it in your source files. The quickstart’s example uses Python with the ElevenLabs SDK. For local playback of the generated audio, the quickstart notes that MPV and/or ffmpeg may be needed.

How script handling differs between the routes

This is the distinction that most often causes problems, so it is worth settling before you choose a route.

  • GenFM writes the text from your source. If you already have a script, GenFM’s help article warns that using the Generate a podcast option “will modify your script.” ElevenLabs recommends starting with New empty audio project or Narrate an audiobook instead.
  • The API controls the request, not your wording. You set the mode, duration, language, intro and outro, and style instructions. The API reference does not describe a way to supply a finished script to the podcast endpoint.
  • Text-to-speech converts your script. If the wording must stay exactly as written, use a narration or text-to-speech route rather than GenFM or the podcast endpoint.

In practice, use GenFM or the API when you want the service to produce the podcast’s text from sources. Use narration or text-to-speech when your script is the product.

Cost and access

  • GenFM requires a paid subscription. Plan prices and usage quotas were not verified for this article, so check your account’s current plan details before you subscribe.
  • The API bills audio generation. The API reference, accessed October 7, 2026, says ElevenLabs currently covers the LLM cost but charges for audio generation. The same reference says future billing may include both costs. Confirm the current billing terms before you budget for episodes.

Voices and equipment

Voice cloning is optional. You can choose existing voices, either the suggested pair in GenFM or voices from My Voices. The API’s conversation mode requires host and guest voice IDs, so identify the voices you plan to use before you build a request.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The documented source-to-audio workflow does not require any physical equipment. The sources do not establish a microphone, recorder or studio accessory as necessary, and they do not recommend a specific device. Speakers or headphones are only needed to listen to the output. If you clone a voice, the sources do not specify the recording equipment, so choose it based on your own needs.
