To create a virtual disk in Windows 11, use Disk Management’s Action > Create VHD command and choose VHDX. To preserve a complete Hyper-V virtual machine, use Export instead of copying only its disk file. Cross-platform use requires checking the receiving hypervisor’s current support for the disk format and its VM import or conversion process; a VHDX alone is not a portable, ready-to-run VM.

Choose what you need to preserve

A .vhd or .vhdx file is a virtual disk: it holds disk contents, but not necessarily the VM configuration needed to run a machine. Microsoft describes VHDs as designed primarily for Hyper-V and calls VHDX the recommended file type in its Windows 11 VHD management instructions.

A Hyper-V export is a fuller package. It gathers virtual disk files, VM configuration files, and any checkpoint files into one unit. Copying a disk and exporting a VM therefore serve different purposes:

  • Need a disk to attach to a VM? Create or copy the VHDX, then confirm the target platform can use that format.
  • Need to preserve a Hyper-V VM? Export it so its configuration and checkpoint files are included.
  • Need to run it on another hypervisor? Check that product’s documentation for the exact version and determine whether it accepts the disk format, imports an appliance, or requires conversion.

Create a VHDX using Windows 11 Disk Management

Microsoft’s documented graphical workflow requires administrator permissions and lists membership in the Backup Operators or Administrators group as a prerequisite. Create the file in a fully qualified storage location outside the Windows directory.

  • [Wide Compatibility] Compatible with PC, Laptop, MacBook, Tablet, Game Consoles and more. Works seamlessly with Windows, macOS, and other USB-enabled devices
  1. Open Disk Management with administrator permissions.
  2. Select Action > Create VHD.
  3. Enter the full location and filename for the virtual disk.
  4. Under the virtual disk file type, select Virtual Disk files (*.vhdx). Set the disk’s virtual capacity and choose Dynamically expanding or Fixed size.
  5. Confirm to create and initialize the disk.

A dynamically expanding disk grows as data is added, while a fixed-size disk is allocated as a fixed-size file. Account for the storage available on the Windows host; the cited Microsoft instructions do not establish performance benchmarks or a universally best choice.

To attach an existing disk later, use Action > Attach VHD and browse to the file. Detaching it makes the disk unavailable to the host without deleting the VHD/VHDX file or its contents.

  • Shock and vibration resistant. Drop resistant up to 6.5ft (1.98m)
  • Cross Compatible USB 3.2 Gen-2 and USB-C (USB-A for older systems)

Use the disk to create a Hyper-V VM

Hyper-V Manager and PowerShell can create a VM that uses an existing virtual disk or a newly created one. Microsoft’s New-VM reference includes a sample command that creates a VM with a new 40 GB VHDX; that is an example, not a general disk-size recommendation.

Back up a complete Hyper-V VM with Export

For a portable set of Hyper-V VM files, use Hyper-V Manager’s Export action or PowerShell. Microsoft documents this command, which takes the VM name and a destination path:

Export-VM -Name <vm name> -Path <path>

Microsoft says a VM can be started or stopped during export, and that the resulting set includes virtual disk files, VM configuration files, and checkpoint files. See Microsoft’s export and import instructions for the documented workflow.

Keep the export separate from the working VM if you want an additional copy; an external drive is one possible destination. An export is not, by itself, proof that the VM can be restored successfully. As a practical check, import the exported VM on a compatible Hyper-V host when feasible and confirm that it starts and that the needed development files are available. The cited documentation does not establish an application-consistent backup guarantee, retention schedule, or offsite-storage policy.

Check Hyper-V compatibility before importing

Hyper-V offers import choices to register a VM in place, restore or copy it to another location, or import a copy with a new ID. Select the route that fits whether the original files should remain in place and whether the imported VM needs a distinct identity.

The VM’s configuration version constrains which Hyper-V hosts can import it. Microsoft says a newer Hyper-V host can typically import a VM from an older host, but an older host cannot import one created on a newer host. Differences between physical hosts may also require changes to settings such as memory, virtual switches, and virtual processors. An export is therefore not a guarantee of identical operation on every Hyper-V system.

Plan cross-platform use around the receiving hypervisor

Portability has two separate parts: whether the receiving software can read the virtual disk container, and whether it can import and run the VM configuration with suitable virtual hardware. Confirm both against the target product’s current documentation before converting or moving files.

Target or route What the cited documentation establishes What to verify
Oracle VirtualBox 7.2 Its storage documentation lists VDI, VMDK, VHD, and HDD disk images. The cited list establishes VHD support, not VHDX support or compatibility of every VM configuration. Check the exact VirtualBox version and whether the VM must be imported or rebuilt.
VMware products using an OVA migration route A Broadcom article describes exporting an OVA from VirtualBox and importing it into VMware Fusion, Workstation, or Player. The article lists legacy product versions, so verify the current product’s supported import workflow rather than treating the instructions as current compatibility certification.
VMware-related disk use in VirtualBox VirtualBox’s 7.2 documentation lists VMDK as a supported disk image format and associates it with VMware use. This does not certify that a VM’s configuration or virtual hardware will transfer correctly between versions or products.

The Broadcom migration example is documented at this VirtualBox-to-VMware article. It demonstrates an OVA export/import approach for the versions it names, not a guarantee for current VMware releases.

Use a cautious conversion workflow

  1. Identify the exact receiving hypervisor and version, then check its current documentation for supported disk formats and VM import routes.
  2. Keep an untouched copy of the original VHDX or Hyper-V export.
  3. When conversion is needed, work on a duplicate and use the receiving platform’s documented conversion or appliance-import process.
  4. Import or attach the converted copy on the target host, adjust configuration for its virtual hardware and networking, and confirm that the guest starts and the required files are present.

Do not infer that support for VHD means support for VHDX, or that a readable disk container means the VM configuration will import unchanged. The correct route depends on the target’s version and the development environment you need to preserve.
