The Crazy Creek Boat Chair is a newly announced dual-purpose product: Crazy Creek describes it as a Type IV throwable personal flotation device (PFD) that unfolds into a legless chair. The announcement gives a price of $119.95 USD and says availability is due to begin in November 2026; it does not establish that the chair is already on sale.
What the Crazy Creek Boat Chair is
Crazy Creek announced the Boat Chair as a throwable flotation device that can also serve as a seat on a boat, dock, shoreline, or in the water. The design uses the company’s legless chair format. Those descriptions come from the launch announcement, not independent testing.
In explaining the product’s intent, Crazy Creek co-owner Karson Bagby said: “Every boat under 16 feet has to carry this gear anyway, so we thought why not make it versatile, comfortable, and something you’ll get more regular use out of,” according to the announcement. That is the company’s explanation, not legal guidance about what equipment a particular boat must carry.

The announcement also describes an extra-thick bottom cushion intended to add buoyancy and comfort on hard surfaces, reflective trim for visibility in low light, quick-dry fabric for sun and spray, and a folding format intended to fit most boat storage compartments. These are product claims in the announcement; it provides no independent performance measurements.
Is it Coast Guard-approved, and what does Type IV mean?
The Outdoor Industry Association announcement calls the Boat Chair a U.S. Coast Guard-approved Type IV throwable PFD. It also says the design is for boats 16 feet and longer. The announcement is the basis for those statements; no Coast Guard record was independently verified here.

That distinction matters if you are considering the chair as required safety equipment. The announcement alone does not establish which equipment your vessel must carry, whether this particular item satisfies requirements where you boat, or how it must be stored or used. Confirm those points with the relevant boating authority and check the product’s official approval information before relying on it for compliance. A regular camp chair is not a substitute for required flotation equipment.
