The Cray XK6 was a hybrid supercomputer platform that combined AMD CPUs, Nvidia GPUs and Cray’s Gemini interconnect. Cray described a system scaled to 500,000 scalar processors as capable of 50 petaflops of hybrid peak performance—but that was a vendor-stated platform capability, not a measured result. The separate 35-petaflop figure in the original headline is not verified by the primary sources reviewed.
What the Cray XK6 combined
The XK6 was institutional high-performance computing infrastructure, not a standalone CPU or GPU product. Cray’s 2012 annual report described it as a hybrid architecture joining the Gemini interconnect, AMD multi-core scalar processors and Nvidia many-core GPU processors. The design was intended to scale for scientific workloads, with attention to system scale and resilience.
In a July 2011 announcement, Cray said the XK6 paired Gemini with next-generation AMD CPUs and Nvidia Tesla 20-Series GPUs. The company then expected availability in the second half of 2011 and described the platform as scalable to more than 50 petaflops. Those were forward-looking statements at the time.

What the performance figures mean
Cray’s 2012 SEC-filed Form 10-K put the XK6’s potential scale at 500,000 scalar processors and 50 petaflops of hybrid peak performance. “Peak” is a theoretical system-performance measure; it does not establish the speed an installed machine achieved on an application. The filing’s figure is a platform capability claim, not a report of a measured benchmark.

The headline’s 35-petaflop figure is not corroborated by the primary sources reviewed. They do not identify a matching XK6 configuration, a benchmark result, or an accepted measurement at that level. It should therefore be treated as an unverified headline claim, not as an established delivered performance figure.
How Titan and Blue Waters fit in
| System or claim | Figure and metric | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Cray XK6 platform, Cray 2012 Form 10-K | Up to 500,000 scalar processors; 50 petaflops hybrid peak performance | Cray’s stated potential platform scale, not a measured installed-system result. |
| Titan at Oak Ridge, Nvidia announcement, October 2011 | Potential peak performance above 20 petaflops; up to 18,000 GPUs | An announcement-era planned configuration for an XK6-based system. It does not establish a 35-petaflop XK6 result. |
| Blue Waters, Cray announcement, November 2011 | More than one petaflop sustained performance expected on demanding scientific applications | A forecast for the combined system: a Cray XE6 with a future XK6 upgrade. Sustained application performance is not the same metric as theoretical peak. |
| Original headline claim | 35 petaflops; metric and configuration not established | Not verified by the primary sources reviewed. |
Titan: a planned system, not a platform benchmark
Nvidia’s October 2011 announcement described Titan at Oak Ridge National Laboratory as a Cray XK6-based supercomputer with potential peak performance above 20 petaflops and up to 18,000 GPUs. Those were figures for the planned system at announcement time. They cannot be substituted for the XK6 platform’s stated maximum, or used to infer a 35-petaflop result.

Blue Waters: sustained performance on applications
Cray’s November 2011 Blue Waters announcement described an XE6 system with a future XK6 upgrade, integrated as one hybrid system. Cray forecast more than one petaflop of sustained performance on demanding scientific applications and listed AMD 16-core Opteron 6200 processors and Nvidia’s then-next-generation Kepler GPU. This application-focused forecast is distinct from a theoretical peak figure and applies to the combined Blue Waters system.

Why the 35-petaflop claim cannot be inferred
Performance figures need their metric and context. The XK6’s 50-petaflop figure is a vendor-stated peak capability at platform scale; Titan’s above-20-petaflop figure was a planned system-level peak; and Blue Waters’ above-one-petaflop figure was a forecast of sustained application performance. None documents a measured 35-petaflop XK6 configuration. Without a source identifying the machine configuration and measurement behind that number, the claim remains unresolved.
