Yes: a fan-made native PC port of the original 1999 PlayStation game, Crash Team Racing: Turbocharged, is available for Windows and Linux. Its creator, Cameron Redmore (Camzie99), disclosed using large language models to generate code in small, reviewable chunks. That is evidence of AI-assisted coding, not proof that the whole port—or any particular share of it—was AI-written. The project also builds on earlier community decompilation and porting work.

What Crash Team Racing: Turbocharged is

Crash Team Racing: Turbocharged is a fan-made native PC port of the 1999 PS1 kart racer, rather than a newly released official PC edition. The project page lists build 07d0c49, dated October 6, 2026, for Windows and Linux. Its maintainers say it preserves the original game logic, tracks, and handling while adding a cleaned-up native 3D renderer, widescreen ratios, higher frame-rate targets, and optional settings for a more PS1-like presentation. Those are project claims, not independent performance-test results. See the Turbocharged project page.

The port sits on top of prior community work: Turbocharged is a fork of High Octane, which in turn is based on CTR Native and the CTR-tools decompilation project. It is therefore more accurate to describe it as a feature-rich continuation of community reverse-engineering and porting work than as a port built from scratch by one creator. What the creator said about using AI

GamesRadar reports that Redmore confirmed using large language models to write code. In his account, he planned features and identified likely changes before asking an LLM to generate relatively small pieces, such as a function or a single file. He described the process as “much more fine-grained and iterative.” GamesRadar’s report and quoted explanation.

  • Start your engines with the original game modes, characters, tracks, power-ups, weapons and controls

This supports calling Turbocharged AI-assisted software development. It does not establish what percentage of the final code came from an LLM, verify each step of the development history, or amount to an independent audit of the code. The disclosed workflow also matters: the creator says he scoped and reviewed smaller generated pieces, rather than asking an AI system to produce the entire project in one pass.

What changes—and what stays familiar

The Turbocharged project describes its options as individually adjustable, rather than forcing players to choose one fixed visual or gameplay mode. The maintainers list renderer and visual treatment, frame-rate target, aspect ratio, gameplay options, HUD and other interface choices, and controller bindings among the configurable areas. Their two named presets illustrate the range:

Turbocharged Uses the native renderer and adds extended AI racers.

The project lists frame-rate targets up to 240 FPS, but that is a stated capability, not a promise that every PC will reach it. The maintainers say high frame rates require a reasonably quick CPU and GPU. They also note that some GPU drivers have issues with 32-bit builds under native Wayland; experimental 64-bit and ARM builds are untested. These qualifications and feature descriptions come from the project page for the build dated October 6, 2026. Turbocharged project page.

What you need to play

The download does not include the game data. Turbocharged’s setup instructions ask players to provide their own NTSC-U retail copy as a raw MODE2/2352 BIN dump; the software imports the data it needs. CTR Native likewise says ordinary play requires the user’s own NTSC-U retail disc image and warns that a cooked 2048-byte ISO lacks the sector data needed for XA/STR audio and video. Follow the requirements for the specific fork you use: setup instructions can differ between projects. Turbocharged setup information · CTR Native README.

These are the projects’ technical setup requirements, not legal advice. If you do not already have a suitable copy and image, the relevant physical item is the original PS1 game disc; Turbocharged itself is not the game-data download.

How Turbocharged relates to CTR Native and Overdrive

CTR Native is a separate community port based on the CTR-ModSDK decompilation project. Overdrive is a separate CTR Native edition, not a Turbocharged release or a feature set that should be assumed to apply to Turbocharged. Its own project page documents Windows and SteamOS/Steam Deck support, modern controller and keyboard support, and a compatible NTSC-U disc-image requirement. It says public v0.1.0 was tested on Windows and that its packaged SteamOS installer and game were verified on a physical Steam Deck. Keep those platform-testing statements scoped to Overdrive.
