The Coway Airmega 400 has strong maximum-speed particle-cleaning performance, but its headline room figures need context: Coway rates it for 1,560 square feet at two air changes per hour, while ENERGY STAR lists 583 square feet and RTINGS recommends 575 square feet under its own test methodology. If you need effective cleaning in a large room, the key question is whether you can run it fast enough—and tolerate the noise—to get the turnover you want.
What the Airmega 400 offers
The standard Airmega 400 is a large, floor-standing purifier with two washable pre-filters and two replaceable Max2 cartridges. Coway describes each Max2 filter as combining activated carbon and HEPA filtration. The purifier includes automatic, eco, and sleep modes, a timer, filter wash and change indicators, real-time air-quality monitoring, and a color-coded air-quality indicator. The standard 400 does not have Wi-Fi or app control.
Coway’s US product page lists smoke and dust CADR at 328 CFM each and pollen CADR at 400 CFM. Those are manufacturer specifications; independent database figures differ, as discussed below. The unit measures 14.8 × 22.8 × 14.8 inches, weighs 24.7 pounds, and has a listed power consumption of 66 W. That footprint is substantial, so measure the intended spot and leave room to access both filter assemblies.

How large a room can it clean?
The different room-size figures reflect different stated assumptions and sources, not one universally comparable rating. Coway’s larger coverage figures assume relatively low air turnover; ENERGY STAR and RTINGS publish smaller room figures. For a practical decision, consider both the desired air changes per hour (ACH) and the fan speed you are willing to use.

At maximum speed, RTINGS measured 368 CFM PM1.0 CADR on its Graphite-model test. At its low-noise threshold, the measured figure was 117 CFM. A room near the maximum-speed recommendation and a room near the low-noise recommendation are therefore very different use cases: quieter operation means less air processed per unit of time. ENERGY STAR’s record for model AP-2015F lists 376 CFM smoke CADR, 384 CFM dust CADR, 409 CFM pollen CADR, and 380 CFM PM2.5 CADR. Those are the database’s figures, and should not be blended with Coway’s or RTINGS’ measurements as though all were obtained using the same protocol. Is it quiet enough for a bedroom or living room?
RTINGS measured 31.6 dBA at the lowest speed and 60.1 dBA at the highest speed. Its review characterizes the lower speeds as quiet enough for many bedrooms and living spaces, while the maximum setting is a substantially louder trade-off for higher airflow. Coway’s US page lists a 22–52 dB(A) noise range. These are separate figures from different sources and measurement conditions, so they should not be treated as directly comparable readings.

The useful choice is between the quieter setting you can run continuously and the faster setting needed when you want more air processed. If a room is near the larger coverage numbers, do not assume that low-noise operation will deliver the same cleaning rate as maximum speed; RTINGS’ measurements show a marked reduction in airflow at its low-noise threshold.
What maintenance and filter replacement involve
Both washable pre-filters can be cleaned and reused; the two Max2 cartridges are replaced as a set. Coway describes the Max2 set as lasting about a year in its specifications, while its product page also gives a 6–12 month range and says filter life is estimated based on usage. RTINGS likewise advises regular pre-filter cleaning and roughly annual replacement of both Max2 cartridges. Actual replacement timing depends on use and the unit’s indicators.

- When the replacement indicator calls for it, verify that the replacement set fits Airmega 400/AP-2015F before ordering. ENERGY STAR lists replacement model numbers 1230060 and 3104757 for the certified model.
- Replace both Max2 cartridges together, then reset or follow the purifier’s filter indicator instructions as applicable.
Because the unit uses two cartridges at once, ongoing filter cost is a meaningful part of ownership. The sources do not establish a stable current replacement price, so check the price and compatibility at purchase rather than assuming a particular annual cost. The ENERGY STAR record identifies the AP-2015F filter numbers, while Coway’s product page describes the filter set and estimated service life.
What are the main drawbacks?
- Large footprint: At 14.8 × 22.8 × 14.8 inches and 24.7 pounds, it takes substantial floor space and is not especially convenient to move between rooms.
- No connected controls: The standard Airmega 400 has no Wi-Fi or app support, so operation relies on the controls on the unit and its included automatic features.
- Room coverage depends on speed and turnover: The high manufacturer room figures assume one or two ACH; higher effective airflow comes with the louder top setting.
- Two replacement cartridges: The paired Max2 set means replacing two cartridges, and the sources do not establish a current, fixed replacement price.
Verdict: who should buy the Airmega 400?
The Airmega 400 is a sensible option for someone who wants substantial particle-cleaning airflow, accepts a large floor-standing unit, and is comfortable managing two replaceable cartridges. Its high-speed results are the stronger case for large spaces; its low-noise airflow is better suited to smaller areas or users who prioritize quieter operation. Choose it only after matching your room and desired air turnover to a fan setting you can realistically live with. If app control or compact placement is essential, this standard model does not meet those needs.
