A TikTok user named Patrick reportedly said Walmart butter marked $3.98 rang up for more less than two minutes after he left the shelf. That account has not been independently verified, and the available reporting does not establish the store, date, product, shelf tag or checkout price. Walmart says its digital labels can update prices quickly, but also says updates generally happen outside regular shopping hours and that shelf prices should match checkout.
What did the shopper say happened?
The Daily Dot reported that Patrick said the butter was marked $3.98 and cost more at checkout. He reportedly said less than two minutes passed between leaving the shelf and reaching the register. According to the article, Patrick also recounted a manager explaining: “The prices can change from the time you leave the area to the time you get to the register because the computer updates.” Daily Dot report
That is a report of Patrick’s account, not verified evidence of the transaction or an authenticated recording of the manager. The coverage does not identify a Walmart location, transaction date, specific butter product, receipt, shelf-tag photo or checkout record. It therefore does not establish that Walmart changed this product’s price during that interval, or what caused the reported difference.

Walmart’s public materials also say digital-label price updates generally happen outside regular shopping hours. The company’s CEO, John Furner, has written: “A shelf price should match what rings up at checkout.” Walmart presents digital labels as a way to display the right price more consistently. What else could explain a shelf-and-register mismatch?
A mismatch does not, by itself, show that a retailer intentionally raised a price after a shopper selected an item. How widespread are Walmart’s digital labels?
The Associated Press reported in March 2026 that Walmart said 2,300 U.S. stores already had digital shelf labels and that the company expected to deploy them chain-wide within the next year. AP also reported Walmart’s assurance: “We don’t set different prices based on who you are or the time of day, and we won’t.” These figures and statements are attributed to Walmart through AP reporting, not independent audits. What should you do if the checkout price is higher?
- Check that the shelf label and item correspond to the same product and size.
- Ask a store associate or manager to verify the shelf price and the price shown at checkout. If practical, note the product and keep the receipt or a photo of the label.
- If the difference remains unresolved, contact the store or consult the rules that apply where you shop. The legal outcome can depend on location.
