Yes, Stefon Diggs had a plausible path to a bigger receiving role in Washington’s London matchup with Indianapolis—but the case was a pregame projection, not a guarantee. ESPN analyst Seth Walder projected at least 85 receiving yards, compared with Diggs’ 55-yard season high at the time. The preview pointed to his route-based usage and a Colts defense giving up substantial yardage as reasons for optimism.
What was the projection for Stefon Diggs?
In an ESPN Week 4 preview republished by ABC7 New York, analyst Seth Walder expected Diggs to record at least 85 receiving yards against the Colts. The preview said Diggs’ season high was 55 yards at that point in the season. The 85-yard figure was Walder’s forecast; it was not a result Diggs had already posted. Read the ABC7 New York preview.
Why did a larger role look possible?
Diggs was earning targets on his routes
The preview reported that Diggs was targeted on 33% of his routes and averaged 1.8 yards per route run. Those figures suggested he was involved when Washington sent him out, supporting the possibility of more receiving production. They describe his usage at the time of the preview, however, and do not establish how many targets he would receive in London.

Indianapolis was allowing 417.3 total yards per game, the NFL’s highest figure at the time, according to ESPN Research as cited in the preview. The article also suggested Diggs could exploit slot coverage. That was a matchup thesis, not proof that Indianapolis’ coverage would produce a specific advantage for him.

What could complicate the passing outlook?
Quarterback availability was relevant to Washington’s passing game. An October 2 podcast-directory listing said Jayden Daniels was out and Marcus Mariota would make his second consecutive start. That listing is secondary context, not an official injury report, so it should not be treated as authoritative confirmation of player status. See the October 2 podcast listing.
When and where was the game scheduled?
The preview listed the game as Colts at Commanders in London, scheduled for 9:30 a.m. ET on NFL Network. The schedule and matchup details appeared in ABC7 New York’s republished preview.

How to read the forecast
- Evidence for a larger day: Diggs’ reported 33% route-target rate, 1.8 yards per route run, and a favorable-looking opponent yardage figure gave the projection a statistical and matchup basis.
- Reason for caution: His reported season high was 55 yards, well short of Walder’s 85-yard threshold, and a route-target rate does not guarantee future volume.
- What the figures do not show: They do not establish that Diggs reached 85 yards or reveal his actual London-game result.
Accordingly, the strongest supported conclusion is that a bigger role was plausible before kickoff, not that it was certain or ultimately happened. The available preview material does not establish Diggs’ final receiving total in the London game.
