South Africa is scheduled to host Australia for three Tests in October 2026, at Durban, Gqeberha and Cape Town—not Johannesburg. Greg Chappell argues that choosing coastal venues rather than the high-altitude Wanderers could favor South Africa’s bowlers and test Australia’s batters. That is a cricketing theory, not a confirmed reason for the schedule or a result that has already been proved.
Where and when are the 2026 Tests?
Cricket South Africa’s announced itinerary has Australia playing three Tests at coastal grounds. Johannesburg’s Wanderers is not included in the Test schedule.

These are forthcoming fixtures, not completed matches. The schedule confirms the venues and dates; it does not state that South Africa selected them to counter Australia. Cricket South Africa’s home-season announcement is the primary source for the itinerary.
Why might the venues matter?
Chappell’s argument is that conditions at the three coastal grounds could place a premium on movement through the air or off the pitch, rather than the pace and steep bounce he associates with Johannesburg. His descriptions are assessments of likely conditions, not guarantees: pitch preparation, weather and match conditions can change how a ground plays.

Durban: early help, then a possible settling surface
Chappell characterizes Kingsmead as a ground that may offer assistance early before becoming more settled. If that pattern occurs, the first innings could demand particular care from batters, while later batting conditions might differ. Neither phase is assured in advance.
Gqeberha: dryness and the possibility of reverse swing
He describes St George’s Park as dry and abrasive, with reverse swing potentially becoming relevant later in a match. Whether that develops depends on the surface, ball condition, weather and bowlers’ ability to make use of it.

Cape Town: movement early, then a flatter surface
Chappell’s assessment of Newlands is that it may offer movement early before flattening. A side that handles the opening conditions well could face a different challenge as the match progresses.

The Wanderers is absent from the announced Test itinerary, and Chappell argues that Johannesburg’s altitude and bounce can suit Australian fast bowlers who use pace and steep lift. He also says Johannesburg has not been an Australia-proof venue, citing Australian Test victories there in 2002, 2006 and 2011, including Pat Cummins’s seven-wicket debut in 2011. Those historical figures are claims reported in his column, not independently verified scorecard totals here.

Chappell contrasts that record with South African success at Newlands and Centurion. His point is that venue reputation alone does not guarantee a home advantage; the conditions and the players who exploit them matter. The itinerary includes Newlands but not Centurion, so the broader venue comparison should not be mistaken for a description of this series’ three grounds.
What is the Waterloo analogy—and where does it stop?
The headline’s reference to Wellington and Napoleon is Chappell’s analogy: he likens selecting a venue that limits an opponent’s strengths to the strategic value of choosing ground. It is a rhetorical frame for the cricket argument, not evidence that venue choice alone determines a contest. The historical premise is not independently established by the cricket sources cited here.

What would determine whether the plan works?
Venue selection can shape the conditions a team encounters, but it cannot ensure that those conditions appear as expected or that one side will use them better. Chappell’s case depends on several linked factors:

- Bowling fit: South Africa’s attack would need to exploit movement or reverse swing if those opportunities arise.
- Batting adaptation: Australia’s batters would need to adjust to the conditions, while South Africa’s batters would face the same pitches.
- Availability and execution: player selection, fitness and performance can alter the matchup. Chappell’s comments about fitness, Usman Khawaja’s absence and possible Australian batting-order choices are time-sensitive views, not official team confirmations in the schedule announcement.
Chappell’s column therefore supports a plausible tactical argument, not a prediction with a guaranteed outcome. The series will show whether the coastal grounds create the kind of contest he anticipates.
