Sony has not confirmed an updated PlayStation Portal, a second model, or an announcement date. As of October 7, 2026, its official updates describe software improvements for the existing remote player—not new hardware. If you need a handheld screen for your PS5 now, judge the current Portal on what it does and the network it needs; if you are waiting for new hardware, there is no confirmed timing or feature list to guide that choice.

Has Sony announced a new PlayStation Portal?

No. Sony’s official materials available through October 7, 2026 do not confirm a refreshed Portal, a “Portal 2,” or when either might be announced. That does not rule out a future announcement; it means there is no official launch date, price, or specification to plan around.

Sony’s recent public activity instead concerns software for the existing device. The company has described Portal as continuing to evolve through improvements to Remote Play and cloud streaming. That language refers to the experience, not a promise of a hardware revision. Sony also called Portal one of its “strong and profitable peripherals” in its 2025 corporate strategy presentation, but that characterization is not an announcement of a new model. Sony’s March 2026 update announcement and its Portal software update notes document changes to the current device.

What the current PlayStation Portal does

Portal is a Wi-Fi remote player for compatible PS5 games installed on a paired PS5. It is not a standalone handheld that runs locally installed games. Sony lists an 8-inch LCD at 1080p, with gameplay capability up to 60 frames per second. Actual streaming quality depends on network conditions. Sony requires a broadband connection of at least 5 Mbps and recommends 15 Mbps or more for a better experience. For Remote Play, the PS5 needs to be connected to broadband and either on or in Rest Mode. Sony’s product information has the current device details.

Remote Play streams from your PS5

With Remote Play, the paired console runs the game and streams it to Portal. Sony says this feature does not require PlayStation Plus. The practical fit is therefore a player who owns a PS5, has games installed on it, and can use a reliable Wi-Fi connection where they want to play.

Cloud streaming runs supported games from Sony’s servers

Cloud streaming is a separate way to play. It can work while the PS5 is powered off or being used by another account, but only for supported games and in supported regions. Sony requires PlayStation Plus Premium for this feature. Do not assume every game in a library can be streamed or that the cloud option removes all network requirements. Sony’s cloud-streaming support page explains eligibility and availability.

What changed in the latest confirmed update?

Sony said a global software rollout would begin March 18, 2026. The headline addition was a 1080p High Quality mode for Remote Play and Cloud Streaming. Sony describes it as using a higher bitrate than the default 1080p Standard mode; a higher bitrate can use more network capacity, so the mode does not guarantee a sharper or smoother picture on every connection. The update also refined the cloud-streaming interface, made game-invite and trophy notifications clearer, and revised search. These are software changes to the current Portal, not evidence that new hardware is imminent. Sony’s announcement lists the rollout details.

Sony’s support notes also describe cloud-streaming functions including finding streamable games, purchasing games while streaming, joining multiplayer sessions from invites, and using accessibility features during streaming. The notes identify 1080p High Quality as the maximum resolution. They also say the Portal charges to 80% by default after the relevant software update, with the limit intended to support long-term battery health. Check the current software notes for the update information.

What Sony’s Portal figures do—and do not—show

In its March 2026 post, Sony reported that monthly cloud-streaming users grew 162% year over year in January 2026; the post’s footnote defines the comparison as December 2025 to January 2026. Sony also said more than 50% of Portal users were PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers. These are company-reported cloud-streaming engagement and subscription figures, not Portal sales numbers, and neither confirms a hardware refresh. The figures appear in Sony’s update post.

Should you buy a PlayStation Portal now or wait?

The decision is between a product with known capabilities and an unannounced possibility with no verified timing or specifications. Consider how you would use the current model, then decide whether the uncertainty of waiting matters more than playing now.

Availability and price Check Sony or a retailer for current regional availability and price; no price is established here. No official price or launch timing has been announced.
How games run Remote Play streams compatible games from a paired PS5; supported cloud games require PlayStation Plus Premium. No official specifications or game-access details are available.
Display and performance 8-inch 1080p LCD, up to 60fps capability; streaming quality depends on the network. No official display, performance, or battery specifications are available.
Best reason to choose it You want to play compatible PS5 games remotely now and meet the console and Wi-Fi requirements. You are willing to wait without a confirmed date in case Sony announces hardware changes.

The current model may suit you if

  • You already have a PS5 and want to play its compatible games away from the television.
  • Your Wi-Fi and broadband connection are dependable in the places you intend to use Portal.
  • You understand the difference between streaming from your console and streaming supported games from Sony’s servers.

Waiting may suit you if

  • You are not in a hurry and would rather evaluate an officially announced device before buying.
  • You would only upgrade for a specific improvement—such as a different display or battery—and want verified specifications before deciding.

There is no official evidence that such upgrades are coming, so waiting is a preference for avoiding a near-term purchase, not a decision based on a known release window. If you buy the current model, confirm its regional availability and price at purchase time.
