Nanopore methods have detected or characterized protein targets linked to Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s in separate research studies. They are not yet one combined test, and the cited studies do not establish a routine, approved diagnostic or a home test. The work is promising because it explores how individual molecules and protein aggregates might be distinguished in biological samples, but the results vary by target, sample, and method.

What a nanopore protein test does

A nanopore is a tiny opening through which molecules pass. Researchers monitor changes in an electrical signal as molecules move through or interact with the pore. In protein research, those signals can help detect or characterize protein forms, including oligomers—assemblies of multiple protein molecules.

The approach faces a selectivity problem in real biological fluids: target proteins may be scarce, vary in size and shape, and appear alongside many other molecules that can contribute background. A review of amyloid-particle analysis also notes that these particles are heterogeneous and can interconvert, complicating their measurement and characterization. Nanopore methods are an emerging analytical approach, not a settled clinical solution. The 2018 review discusses these concepts and challenges.

Three separate lines of research—not one Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s test

Study and target Sample or setting reported Approach and result
2023 JACS study: misfolded protein oligomers, including α-synuclein Laboratory characterization; α-synuclein oligomers were examined with small-molecule inhibitors as an example relevant to Parkinson’s research Solid-state nanopores with multiplexed DNA barcoding to detect and characterize oligomeric species. The paper describes its method as “a single-molecule approach for the detection and quantification of oligomeric species.” Read the JACS study.
2023 Parkinson’s study: α-synuclein oligomers Clinical samples from Parkinson’s patients and healthy controls A nanopore and aptamer-modified DNA carrier approach was used to capture and identify oligomers. The study reports differentiating the patient and control cohorts; this is research evidence, not validation for routine diagnosis. See the PubMed record.
2025 Alzheimer’s study: Aβ42, Aβ40, APP(669–711), and Tau-related targets Biological samples, including serum and CSF, as well as Alzheimer’s mouse models A label-free multianalyte nanopore platform reported biomarker detection, including Aβ42 in CSF, and age-dependent Aβ changes in mouse models. Mouse-model results do not establish accuracy or diagnostic usefulness in people. See the PubMed record.

These studies use different targets, sample types, and selectivity strategies. They are not head-to-head comparisons, so their results cannot establish which approach is better or whether they could be combined into a single clinical test.

How to interpret the reported detection limits

The 2025 Alzheimer’s biomarker study reports analytical detection figures in serum: 2.1 pM for Aβ42, 1.5 pM for APP(669–711), and 627 fM for Aβ40. These are detection limits reported by Liu and colleagues for that study’s platform, not clinical sensitivity or specificity. A low analytical detection limit alone does not show that a test can reliably diagnose Alzheimer’s disease or improve care. The study record also describes comparison with ELISA and findings in mouse models; those details do not establish regulatory clearance or routine clinical use.

What the Parkinson’s patient results show—and do not show

The 2023 α-synuclein study is distinct from the laboratory DNA-barcoding work. It reports detecting α-synuclein oligomers in clinical samples and differentiating Parkinson’s patient and healthy-control cohorts using aptamer-modified DNA carriers with a nanopore. This supports continued investigation of the method, but cohort differentiation in a research paper is not the same as a validated diagnostic test available for clinicians or patients.

The carrier strategy addresses a practical challenge: finding a specific, low-abundance target amid other material in a complex sample. The study describes nanopore sensing’s selectivity difficulties and uses aptamers—molecules designed to bind a target—on DNA carriers to improve capture and identification. The study record describes the Parkinson’s work.

What would be needed before clinical use

Analytical detection, biological-sample detection, animal-model observations, and patient-cohort differentiation answer different questions. A clinical diagnostic would need evidence that its results are reliable and meaningful for the intended use in people, along with the applicable regulatory and clinical validation. The cited studies do not establish a commercially available combined Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s nanopore test, clinical approval, or a consumer product.

PRO-Clean 266149 Rapid Protein Residue Test with Easy Release Snap Valve and Color Indicating Reagent
  • Reliable and accurate changeover cleaning verification
  • Liquid stable color indicating reagent
  • Easy to release snape valve
  • Provides results in under 10 minutes
  • Analytical performance: Can the method detect and distinguish its intended target under controlled conditions?
  • Performance in human samples: Does it work consistently in the relevant biofluid despite background molecules and variation between samples?
  • Clinical value: Does the result accurately inform diagnosis or another defined clinical decision in the intended population?

Until such evidence and availability are established, nanopore protein sensing should be understood as experimental research rather than a screening option or a test to seek out for personal diagnosis.
