LaNorris Sellers had not been reported benched as of October 3, 2026. ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported that backup Cutter Woods received more first-team practice reps that week and could replace Sellers if his passing struggles continued. That points to a possible change, not a confirmed decision.
Will LaNorris Sellers be benched?
Not according to the reports available on October 3. The latest report described a conditional scenario: Woods could play if Sellers continued to struggle. It did not report that South Carolina had removed Sellers as its starter. South Carolina was scheduled to play Kentucky that day, so the reports described an evolving situation rather than a settled lineup announcement.
There was reason for the scrutiny. Saturday Down South reported that Sellers had six touchdown passes and four interceptions, while South Carolina’s offense had scored 39 points over its previous seven quarters. Against Alabama, the Gamecocks did not score a touchdown until the Crimson Tide led 35-3. Those figures describe the stretch reported on October 3, not a season-ending statistical line. Saturday Down South attributed the increase in Woods’ first-team reps to ESPN reporter Pete Thamel.

Yes. The October 3 report said Woods received an uptick in first-team reps during the week. A September 30 report had already described him as a possible option, but said head coach Shane Beamer declined to identify which quarterbacks were practicing with the first team. Beamer stressed that competition applied at every position.

First-team practice reps can signal that a player is being evaluated for a larger role; they do not, by themselves, confirm who will start in a game. The reports do not establish that Woods had replaced Sellers.
Who is South Carolina’s backup quarterback?
The reports identified Cutter Woods as South Carolina’s backup option behind Sellers. His previous game experience was limited: the September 30 account said he had appeared in three games that season, most recently against Alabama, and had played sparingly in his two seasons at South Carolina.

That report also cited Woods’ performance against Kent State: 9 completions on 14 attempts for 92 yards and one touchdown. It is evidence of a modest sample, not enough by itself to establish how he would perform as the full-time starter.
What have South Carolina’s coaches said?
Offensive coordinator Kendal Briles acknowledged that Sellers had missed throws, saying, “I wish I could put my finger on it exactly.” Briles said he did not think Sellers had physical limitations and emphasized trusting the offense, seeing the field and knowing where teammates should be.

Briles also described the possibility of other players getting on the field: “Everybody’s competing all the time. There’s always a chance for anybody to be able to get out there. If we feel like that what was what gave us the best chance to win the game, then that’s what we do.” Beamer likewise said, “Every position is accountable. Every week in practice there is competition that’s ongoing at our place, no matter the position.” These comments establish that playing time is competitive; neither is an announcement of a quarterback change.
How does Sellers’ earlier performance compare?
The Associated Press reported that Sellers’ first season in control, 2024, included 2,534 passing yards, 674 rushing yards and 25 touchdowns, as South Carolina went 9-4. The team went 4-8 in the subsequent season; Sellers was sacked 42 times, the most among SEC quarterbacks, and ran for almost 400 fewer yards than in 2024. Those are historical figures and should not be mistaken for his October 2026 totals. The AP report was carried by WTOP.

In the September 30 report, South Carolina was 2-2 overall and 0-2 in SEC play, with no SEC win in more than a calendar year. The account also said Sellers was not the only reason for the team’s first two SEC losses, even as it described missed open receivers and risky throws. That distinction matters: the question was whether a change could help the offense, not whether one player alone explained the results.

A report of increased practice reps is not the same as an official starter announcement. The most useful indicators are a direct statement from the coaching staff or reliable game-week reporting that clearly says who will start. Until that is reported, the accurate description is that Woods had increased first-team reps and could see action if Sellers continued to struggle—not that Sellers had already lost QB1.
