India has not confirmed that its proposed analog wafer fab is moving south—or that the Karnataka project is approved. The likely reference is a $3 billion, 65 nm fab proposal announced by International Semiconductor Consortium (ISMC) and investor Next Orbit Ventures in May 2022. The announcement made the investment conditional on approval by the Government of India. Government project descriptions published for 2025–26 identify other semiconductor projects, but do not list the ISMC proposal; that omission does not establish that it was cancelled or withdrawn.
What is the Karnataka analog-fab proposal?
In May 2022, Next Orbit Ventures announced that ISMC planned to build a 65 nm analog semiconductor fab in Karnataka. The announcement described a proposed investment of $3 billion (about ₹22,900 crore) and explicitly conditioned it on approval by the Government of India. Those figures describe the announced proposal, not money confirmed as spent or a facility confirmed as built. Next Orbit Ventures’ announcement
Analog chips process continuous signals; mixed-signal chips combine analog and digital functions. A wafer fab manufactures semiconductor devices on wafers. That front-end work is distinct from packaging and assembly, which handle finished dies after fabrication.

The available official project descriptions do not establish a later approval, construction start, or production milestone for the ISMC proposal. MeitY’s 2025–26 annual report describes a Tata Electronics silicon fab in Gujarat and a SiCSem project in Odisha, among other semiconductor initiatives, but does not list the Karnataka analog fab. The Prime Minister’s Office announcement of four additional approved units likewise describes projects in Odisha, Punjab, and Andhra Pradesh—not the ISMC proposal. This is a status check based on those published descriptions, not proof that ISMC’s application was formally rejected, cancelled, or withdrawn. #1 Best Overall
- Wafer Pattern May Vary from the Product Images. Great to be used as gift, display object, exhibition, educating demonstration, testing, decoration or your collection
- Beautiful microchip pattern structure made by the advanced copper technology
- 90~130nm minimum microchip feature Copper Characterization with TEOS or Black Diamond Low-k ILD on the single crystal silicon wafer
- The original value of un-polished wafer is above $500
- No guarantee for research and other applications
It helps to separate the milestones: a company announcement or state-level understanding is not the same as central approval; approval is not construction; and construction is not production. The ISMC announcement itself states the approval condition, while the cited government descriptions do not resolve the proposal’s ultimate status.
How does it compare with India’s described fab projects?
| Project | Location | Technology or material | Status and figures in cited descriptions |
|---|---|---|---|
| ISMC / Next Orbit Ventures proposal | Karnataka | Proposed 65 nm silicon analog fab | Company announcement in May 2022; $3 billion (about ₹22,900 crore) proposed investment, conditional on Government of India approval. Later approval or construction status is not stated in the cited official project descriptions. |
| Tata Electronics fab | Gujarat | Silicon fab | MeitY’s 2025–26 annual report describes planned investment of ₹91,526 crore and planned capacity of about 50,000 wafer starts per month. |
| SiCSem facility | Odisha | Silicon carbide (SiC), a compound semiconductor | The PMO describes an approved compound-semiconductor project; MeitY’s 2025–26 annual report gives a described capacity of 5,000 wafers per month. |
The capacity and investment figures for Gujarat and Odisha are project-plan descriptions, not evidence that the facilities are already producing at those levels. The SiC project is also not a substitute name for the Karnataka proposal: silicon carbide is a different material from the silicon process proposed for ISMC’s analog fab. Does India’s semiconductor strategy support analog fabs?
Yes, at the level of national strategy. NITI Aayog’s 2026 semiconductor strategy recommends analog and mixed-signal specialty fabs as part of a differentiated manufacturing approach. India’s semiconductor fabs scheme also includes analog and mixed-signal IC proposals within its scope. Neither the strategy nor the scheme language confirms that a particular applicant—such as ISMC—or a particular site has been approved. So, could India’s analog wafer fab be moving south?
Karnataka is the location named in the 2022 ISMC proposal, so the southern-state connection is real as an announced plan. But the evidence cited here does not show that an approved Indian analog fab is currently moving south, that the Karnataka proposal remains active, or that it has been formally abandoned. The accurate description is an approval-dependent proposal whose current status is unresolved in the cited public project descriptions.
