The April 2020 reports did not establish that hackers could remotely take over every Zoom user’s computer. They described a Windows flaw in older Zoom clients that could expose credentials when someone clicked a malicious chat link, alongside separate Mac issues and unauthorized meeting intrusions.
What the 2020 Zoom warning was about
The headline refers to several different issues reported around April 2020, not one universal attack. The most specific Windows report concerned Zoom’s handling of UNC paths—network locations used by Windows. Japan’s Information-technology Promotion Agency said the affected Zoom Windows clients were versions earlier than 4.6.9 (19253.0401), and advised users to apply Zoom’s fix.
The Windows chat-link issue
An attacker could send a malicious UNC location in Zoom chat. If a Windows user clicked or otherwise interacted with it, Windows could try to connect to the network location and expose Windows credentials. The reported behavior depended on the recipient interacting with the link; it was not evidence of a no-click attack that automatically took over a computer over the internet.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Credential exposure is serious, but it is not the same claim as an attacker gaining complete control of the victim’s device. The available reporting does not establish that every exposed credential could be used to take over the computer.

Separate Mac issues and meeting intrusions
The Futurism story also referred to two separate Mac issues reported by security researcher Patrick Wardle. Ars Technica reported that Zoom said the Windows UNC issue and those Mac issues had been fixed by April 2, 2020. The stories also appeared during broader concern about “Zoombombing,” in which unauthorized people entered meetings; that is a meeting-access problem, distinct from exploiting a client vulnerability to compromise a computer.
Was the reported flaw still unpatched?
The vulnerability was reported in early April 2020, and Zoom’s reported fix followed by April 2. Japan’s Information-technology Promotion Agency identified versions earlier than 4.6.9 (19253.0401) as affected. That historical version threshold does not establish that current supported Zoom clients remain vulnerable to the same issue.

Zoom’s security bulletin index, checked September 28, 2026, lists advisories tied to specific products, versions, dates, and vulnerability identifiers, and recommends updating Zoom to receive fixes and security improvements. Its continuing publication of advisories is a reason to maintain software, not evidence that the 2020 UNC issue is currently exploitable. The available sources do not establish a current exploitation campaign for that specific flaw.

What Zoom users should do
- Update Zoom. Use Zoom’s official in-app updater or its official download center to install the latest version available for your device.
- Keep the operating system updated. Security depends on more than one application; install updates for Windows or macOS and other software as well.
- Treat unexpected chat links cautiously. In particular, do not click a network path or other link from an untrusted sender. Verify unexpected links with the sender through another channel.
- If you used an affected old Windows client, update it. If you believe credentials may have been exposed, follow your organization’s security process or change the relevant password and review account activity. The historical report alone cannot establish whether a particular account was compromised.
Updating reduces exposure to known flaws, but no single update can guarantee that a computer is invulnerable.
