Games Inbox answers the question directly: Australia has classified Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto VI R18+, not Refused Classification. The Australian Classification Board’s August 27, 2026 record lists “High impact violence, sex scenes and drug use.” That means access is restricted to adults; it does not mean the game has been banned.

What does Australia’s GTA 6 classification say?

The Australian Classification Board’s title-specific record for Grand Theft Auto VI lists an R18+ classification and the consumer advice “High impact violence, sex scenes and drug use.” The record is dated August 27, 2026. See the Australian Classification Board record.

R18+ is an adult-restricted category, not a ban. The Board says that “Films and computer games classified as R 18+ are legally restricted to adults 18 years and over.” In other words, the classification restricts who may access the game in Australia; it does not bar the game from classification. Could the sex scenes cause GTA 6 to be refused classification?

Not simply because the game contains sexual content. Australia’s Guidelines for the Classification of Computer Games 2023 say that “Depictions of simulated sexual activity may be permitted” at R18+. They also state that actual sexual activity depictions are not permitted, and that simulated sexual activity that is explicit and realistic is outside the R18+ limit. A game that exceeds the R18+ category is Refused Classification.

Those rules explain the classification threshold; they are not a scene-by-scene account of GTA VI. The Board’s short descriptor confirms that the game contains “sex scenes,” but by itself does not establish what a scene depicts, how explicit it is, or whether players can interact with it. What do the ratings mean in Australia and North America?

Rating labels and descriptors belong to their respective jurisdictions. Australia’s R18+ and North America’s ESRB M rating are not interchangeable measurements, and their wording should not be read as a direct comparison of scene content.

Why is there also a GTA 6 PG listing in Australia?

The Australian Classification Board site has a separate IARC Global Rating Tool entry titled “GTA 6 GRAND THEFT AUTO 6.” It shows PG and lists “Mild Violence, In-Game Purchases, Online Interactivity and Chat.” Its developer and publisher fields are unspecified. The available records do not explain how this generic entry relates to Rockstar’s game.

Rockstar Games Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition (PS4)
  • Grand Theft Auto III: It all starts in Liberty City
  • Grand Theft Auto: Vice City: Welcome to the 1980s
  • Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: Five years ago, Carl 'CJ' Johnson escaped the haze of Los Santos, San Andreas...a city tearing itself apart with gang trouble, drugs, and corruption.

For Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto VI, the relevant record is the Board’s title-specific multi-platform entry naming Rockstar Games, classified R18+ on August 27, 2026. The two listings differ in metadata and descriptors, so they should not be combined or treated as equivalent. Australian Classification Board: GTA 6 GRAND THEFT AUTO 6

What should Australian players take from the rating?

  • It is not a ban: the Rockstar-specific record is R18+, an adult restriction, rather than Refused Classification.
  • The Board confirms sex scenes, not their exact contents: the descriptor does not specify nudity, explicitness, or interactivity.
  • The ESRB listing is separate: North America’s M rating and descriptors do not replace Australia’s R18+ classification.
