MIT researchers demonstrated a woven polyethylene fabric made from the same polymer used in many plastic bags. In laboratory tests, it wicked and evaporated water faster than the cotton, nylon, and polyester samples they compared it with. A life-cycle assessment also estimated potential environmental advantages over some conventional textiles—but it did not measure a reduction in fashion’s total emissions or prove that commercial garments are available.
What the researchers made
The MIT team turned polyethylene (PE) powder into thin fibers, combined those fibers into yarn, and wove the yarn into fabric. The work is described by MIT News, which reported on the research in March 2021.
During extrusion, the fiber surface became slightly oxidized and weakly attracted water. Spaces between fibers in the yarn also formed capillaries that helped move water through the material. The researchers modeled fiber dimensions and arrangements, then wove optimized yarn on an industrial loom.

How its moisture performance compared
In the reported laboratory tests, strips of the PE fabric wicked water faster than the cotton, nylon, and polyester samples used for comparison. The researchers also reported faster water evaporation. These results concern tested fabric samples, not independently tested finished clothing.

Repeated wetting reduced some of the fabric’s water-attracting ability. MIT reported that friction or ultraviolet exposure restored it in the experiments. Research scientist Svetlana Boriskina described the friction approach this way: “You can refresh the material by rubbing it against itself, and that way it maintains its wicking ability.” The result should not be taken as proof that a garment would retain the same performance under everyday wear and washing.
What the environmental assessment does—and does not—show
The researchers used a life-cycle assessment tool commonly used in the textile industry. MIT’s account says they estimated lower life-cycle environmental impact for PE textiles than for cotton and nylon textiles, and lower production energy needs than for cotton and polyester. The account does not provide a single quantified greenhouse-gas reduction.

The proposed advantages relate to factors including PE’s lower melting temperature, production processes, dry coloration, and the possibility of reducing energy used for washing and drying. These are modeled or potential benefits, not evidence that replacing a given share of clothing with PE would cut fashion-sector emissions by a stated amount. The comparison also should not be read as a universal ranking of fabrics: it depends on the assessment’s assumptions and boundaries.
Coloring and end-of-life proposals
The researchers mixed colored particles into PE powder before extrusion, coloring the fibers without a traditional wet-dye process. Boriskina said the team’s proposed recovery approach was: “We can color polyethylene fibers in a completely dry fashion, and at the end of their life cycle, we could melt down, centrifuge, and recover the particles to use again.”

PE is thermoplastic, so melting and reusing it is a research premise. The cited account does not establish a commercial-scale system to collect, sort, and recycle garments made from this fabric. Nor does it say the prototype was made from post-consumer bags; recycled PE is described as a possible source, not a demonstrated feedstock for the prototype.

MIT said the team was exploring lightweight, passively cooling athletic apparel, military attire, and possible spacesuit applications. Those are prospective uses, not confirmed products. The cited reporting does not establish that a purchasable garment made from the studied textile is available.
