The claim that Elon Musk is “back working with the U.S. government” is not established by the available official record. The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) describes Musk as a former White House senior adviser and says the White House reported that he separated from the position in May 2025. The GAO report does not establish a later return. A separate, documentable question is whether SpaceX’s federal business creates risks for its shares: SpaceX says about one-fifth of its 2025 revenue came from federal agencies, and its own offering disclosure describes government powers that could affect contracts and clearances.

What is known about Musk’s government role?

In its 2026 report, DOGE: Information on Personnel and Ethics Activities (GAO-26-108403), the GAO calls Musk “a former senior advisor to the President” and says he “separated from his position in May 2025, according to the White House.” The report also says it could not describe some positions, including Musk’s, in full. It documents the reported separation; it does not establish whether he later took on another formal role, returned to government service, or engaged in informal advisory activity.

That distinction matters. The evidence here does not support treating a return to government work as a confirmed event, nor does the existence of political relationships by itself prove that SpaceX received favorable treatment. The more concrete investor question is how SpaceX’s government contracts, regulatory exposure, political scrutiny, business performance, and governance could affect the company.

How much does SpaceX depend on federal customers?

SpaceX’s 2026 offering disclosure says that approximately one-fifth of its 2025 revenue was attributable to agencies within the U.S. federal government. It names customers including NASA, the Department of War, the General Services Administration, and intelligence agencies. The disclosed work spans launch services, spacecraft development, satellite deployment, and AI products.

That is a meaningful revenue stream, but it is not the whole business. The Associated Press reported from SpaceX’s offering filing that the company had $18.7 billion in revenue and $2.6 billion in operating losses in 2025. Those figures describe company-wide results; they do not show that federal revenue caused the operating losses.

Which risks could affect SpaceX shares?

SpaceX’s offering disclosure lays out direct contract-related risks. The consequences would depend on what happened, which contracts were affected, and whether other business could offset the impact. The disclosure identifies possible government actions and compliance consequences; it does not say that these actions have occurred.

Risk axis What the evidence says Why an investor might care
Federal revenue concentration About one-fifth of 2025 revenue came from U.S. federal agencies, according to SpaceX’s 2026 offering disclosure. A reduction in federal work could matter to revenue, although the effect would depend on the contracts involved and the performance of other businesses.
Contract discretion SpaceX says the government can declare it ineligible for new contracts, terminate existing contracts without advance notice, or reduce their scope and value. Changes to awards or contract terms could affect expected work and add uncertainty to future revenue.
Audits and compliance The disclosure says the government can audit contract-related costs and fees, including allocated indirect costs. SpaceX warns that noncompliance with federal contracting requirements could bring penalties, suspension, debarment, or lost business. Audits, remediation, or penalties could create costs or disrupt access to federal work; the disclosure does not quantify a likely financial impact.
Security clearances SpaceX says the government can revoke required security clearances. If a clearance were needed for affected work and revoked, that could impede performance or eligibility. No such action is established here.
Political and reputational uncertainty Political scrutiny has raised questions about potential favoritism, but the evidence reviewed does not prove improper awards or show that political ties caused specific contracts. Public controversy or a shift in political support could increase uncertainty around oversight and future awards, without demonstrating misconduct or an actual loss of business.

Why political scrutiny is not proof of contract favoritism

SpaceX’s federal contracts, regulatory approvals, and Musk’s political relationships are separate matters. Watchdog and news scrutiny can raise questions about conflicts or oversight, but a question is not a finding that a contract was improperly awarded. The evidence cited here does not establish that political ties caused particular awards, or that a change in political conditions has already changed SpaceX’s contracts.

For shareholders, the practical issue is whether scrutiny leads to a documented change: for example, a contract decision, a new compliance burden, a regulatory delay, or a change in eligibility. Without such evidence, political controversy is a source of uncertainty, not a measurable loss that can be attributed to SpaceX.

What recent financial figures do—and do not—show

SpaceX’s second-quarter 2026 results release reported $7.8 billion in revenue and a $541 million net loss for the quarter ended June 30, 2026. The company also said it had more than $6 billion in multiyear U.S. government contracts for Starshield. These are issuer-reported figures: the quarterly results give context on overall performance, while the Starshield figure describes multiyear contract value. Neither establishes how much of that value will be recognized as revenue in a particular period or predicts share performance.

Investors assessing exposure over time would need to track the federal share of revenue alongside total results and activity in non-government businesses. A single quarter or contract announcement cannot, on its own, establish a trend in dependence, profitability, or future returns.

How Musk’s voting power changes the shareholder question

SpaceX’s offering disclosure says Musk would hold a majority of voting power after the offering and that Class B shares elect a majority of the board. This is a governance issue distinct from federal contracting exposure: it concerns shareholders’ influence over company decisions, rather than proof that government relationships have affected awards.

Prospective investors should consider both factors separately. Federal business can create exposure to government decisions; concentrated voting control can limit the influence of other shareholders. Neither fact alone establishes how the shares will perform.
