El Niño is established and strengthening, and forecasts issued in September 2026 indicate it may persist through February 2027. NOAA gives a 75% chance that October–December 2026 will meet its defined “historic event” threshold—but that is a forecast for one three-month period, not confirmation of a record or a prediction that record strength will last six months.
What the latest official forecasts say
NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center reported on 10 September 2026 that El Niño had strengthened through August. Observed sea-surface temperature index readings were +1.8°C for Niño-3.4, +2.5°C for Niño-3, and +3.4°C for Niño-1+2. NOAA assessed a greater than 90% chance of a very strong event during Northern Hemisphere fall and winter 2026–27. NOAA’s ENSO Diagnostic Discussion also assigned a 75% chance of a “historic event” for October–December 2026, using a specific threshold: a three-month Relative Oceanic Niño Index (RONI) value of +2.5°C or more, stronger than previous events dating back to 1950.
Separately, the World Meteorological Organization’s August update, published 3 September 2026, reported forecasts indicating nearly 100% probability that El Niño would persist through both September–November 2026 and December 2026–February 2027. It anticipated further strengthening and very strong intensity before a peak toward year’s end. These are probabilistic forecasts, not guarantees. Read the WMO update.
Does “six straight months” mean six months at record strength?
No. The six-month framing refers to the expected presence of El Niño conditions across late 2026 and into February 2027. The WMO outlook describes two overlapping three-month seasons: September–November and December–February. Those periods support a forecast of persistence into winter, but they do not establish six consecutive months at historic strength.

NOAA’s historic-event probability applies specifically to October–December 2026 and to its three-month RONI threshold. NOAA’s September RONI outlook shows probability ranges for nine upcoming overlapping three-month seasons; it does not say that the historic threshold will hold throughout all of them. NOAA’s RONI outlook explains that its forecast is synthesized from models and observations and verified using RONI. It also cautions that large RONI values do not necessarily correspond to the strength of impacts.
Is this already the strongest El Niño on record?
Not on the evidence in these forecasts. NOAA’s 75% figure describes the chance that a future three-month period, October–December, will reach a defined historic threshold. It is not a declaration that the threshold has already been reached, nor does it establish a confirmed record. The observed index readings NOAA reported through August describe current conditions; the historic-event probability is a separate forecast claim.

How long do El Niño events usually last?
WMO says El Niño events typically last nine to twelve months and usually peak between November and February. The 2026–27 outlook’s forecast of persistence through February is consistent with that usual duration and peak window, but the outcome remains uncertain as forecasts can change. WMO classifies event strength as weak, moderate, strong, or very strong. “Super El Niño” is not part of its operational classification system. WMO’s explainer on the forecast describes both the typical duration and its terminology.

There is no single global effect that follows automatically from a strong event. El Niño shifts the likelihood of temperature and rainfall patterns, but impacts differ by region and depend on timing, duration, intensity, and interactions with other climate patterns, including the Indian Ocean Dipole. WMO cautions that an event’s strength does not translate directly into the magnitude of impacts in any particular region.

- Allows you to monitor your home and backyard weather conditions with TFT color display
- Wireless all-in-one integrated sensor array measures wind speed/direction, temperature, humidity, rainfall, UV and solar radiation
- Supports both imperial and metric units of measure with calibration available
- Enhanced Wi-Fi connectability option that enables your station to transmit its data wirelessly to the world's largest personal weather station network
- Console power provided by 5V DC adapter (included), and sensor array requires 3 x AAA batteries (not included)
NOAA notes that with an event of this magnitude, the chances of experiencing impacts consistent with El Niño are larger, though not guaranteed. For practical decisions, check the seasonal outlook from your national meteorological service rather than inferring local heat, drought, or rainfall from the global event-strength figure alone.
