There is no public evidence in the available deal announcement that Disney could have bought Epic Games outright. On February 7, 2024, Disney announced a $1.5 billion investment for an equity stake in Epic, alongside a multiyear collaboration tied to Fortnite. A later report quotes Disney executive Dana Walden referring to “very serious questions about an investment and an equity stake,” but that wording does not establish that a full acquisition was offered or seriously negotiated.

What Disney announced in February 2024

Disney described two connected parts of the deal: a $1.5 billion investment to acquire an equity stake in Epic Games, and a multiyear collaboration to build a new games and entertainment universe connected to Fortnite. The transaction was subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals. Disney’s announcement did not describe the deal as an acquisition of Epic or state a specific ownership percentage. Disney’s announcement

The proposed experience was described as open, persistent, and social. Disney said users would be able to play, watch, shop, engage with stories and characters, and create and share experiences. The named franchises included Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and Avatar; the experience was to use Unreal Engine and interoperate with Fortnite. These were announced ambitions, not confirmation that every feature had launched.

Does Dana Walden’s quote mean Disney could have bought Epic?

Not on its own. In an October 2, 2026 report, Gameranx quoted Dana Walden, identified there as Disney’s CCO and president, saying: “It was pretty obvious that we had very serious questions about an investment and an equity stake. Those are not the conversations we’re having right now. We have a great partnership and a number of launches coming up in the next two years that are going to demonstrate the value of this partnership.” Gameranx’s report

The quoted wording concerns an investment and an equity stake; it does not say Disney considered buying all of Epic. The report does not provide the full interview transcript, so the context of Walden’s remarks—and whether an outright purchase was ever discussed—cannot be established from that quotation. The headline claim that Disney “could have bought” Epic therefore goes beyond what the available public evidence confirms.

Why Disney said it wanted the partnership

On Disney’s February 7, 2024 Q1 FY2024 earnings call, CEO Bob Iger pointed to the time younger audiences spent gaming and Disney’s experience with its characters in Fortnite. He described a connected Disney world where people could play and create games, watch, interact, and potentially shop. He presented the investment as a way to strengthen the partnership while limiting Disney’s risk. Disney’s Q1 FY2024 earnings-call transcript

Disney’s announcement said Fortnite had more than 100 million active players and creators, and that more than 15.3 million players had participated in Fortnite’s Marvel Nexus War with Galactus live event. Those are figures reported by Disney in 2024, not independent measurements. Iger also mentioned physical goods as something that might become possible in the future; he did not describe an existing product line tied to the project.

Equity investment versus buying the whole company

The announced investment and a hypothetical full acquisition are different strategic choices. The public materials describe the first but do not provide terms, feasibility, or financial outcomes for the second.
