A new MIT battery prototype is designed to power temporary devices swallowed into the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, then break down. It could offer an alternative to conventional coin cells in some ingestible devices, but it does not make medical batteries obsolete: the work has not shown that the technology can replace long-lasting batteries in pacemakers or other permanent implants.
What the MIT battery is—and how it works
MIT researchers built a bioresorbable battery prototype with a magnesium anode, a molybdenum trioxide cathode and an ionic-liquid gel electrolyte. The design is intended to provide power inside the GI tract and then break down. MIT News reported the work on September 21, 2026, identifying the study as published in Nature Chemical Engineering. MIT News: Batteries that safely break down in the GI tract could improve ingestible devices.
The team made two prototype shapes: a disc 7.5 millimeters in diameter and a rectangular bar 24 millimeters long. MIT reported a voltage of 1.84 volts. Those are prototype specifications, not evidence of a commercially available battery.

How long does it last?
In a highly acidic solution intended to resemble gastric juice, the prototypes functioned normally for about three days. Their performance then began to decline, and they broke down completely within a few weeks. These are results under the reported test conditions; they do not establish a guaranteed operating time or breakdown schedule in people.

The reported duration fits the idea of a temporary power source, not a battery meant to run for years. A dissolving battery might suit an ingestible device designed for short-term use, while a permanent implant has a very different power requirement.
What did the prototypes power?
An ingestible RFID tag
One demonstration paired the battery with an RFID tag that transmitted from the stomach. MIT reported continuous transmission from the GI tract, with a range of up to 1.5 meters in the animal tests. This illustrates a possible way to signal that an ingestible device is present or has reached a particular stage; it does not establish a finished medication-adherence product.

A stomach-stimulation capsule
A second demonstration used a capsule to deliver a small electrical current intended to stimulate ghrelin production. In animal tests reported by MIT, the battery-powered device operated for up to three days. A 20-minute stimulation session raised ghrelin levels by about 50 percent in those tests. That result is from an animal study, not evidence that the device treats a condition or produces the same effect in human patients.

Small conventional coin batteries can pose a safety risk in ingestible devices if their protective coating is damaged in the GI tract, according to MIT. A battery designed to break down could make some temporary swallowed devices more self-contained and reduce battery material passing through wastewater after excretion. This rationale applies to the specific ingestible-device setting; it is not a claim that conventional batteries in medical devices generally are unsafe.

The researchers also point to potential environmental benefits because the materials are intended to degrade. The reported prototype results do not, by themselves, establish the environmental impact of manufacturing, use or disposal at commercial scale.
Could it replace pacemaker batteries or other medical batteries?
No. The research described is aimed at transient ingestible GI electronics. It does not demonstrate a replacement for pacemaker batteries, which must provide dependable power over years, or for batteries used in other long-term implants and medical equipment. The meaningful comparison is between a short-lived device swallowed for a temporary task and a device that must keep working over a much longer period.

Is the battery available or tested in people?
MIT describes a research demonstration and animal tests, not a product available to patients. The report does not establish human safety, clinical efficacy, regulatory clearance or commercial availability. It says the researchers plan a clinical trial for the SAFARI system, expected to begin in about two years; that is a plan reported in 2026, not a confirmed trial start date or evidence of approval.

The full journal text and detailed methods were not available in the material supporting those claims, so the reported measurements should be understood within the test conditions MIT describes rather than generalized to people or other medical devices.
