Possibly—but former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida offered possibilities, not a prediction that a specific game will match Grand Theft Auto VI. He suggested Rockstar’s next entry or a game from a Chinese company might eventually compete, while leaving “success” undefined.
What did Shuhei Yoshida say about GTA 6’s future competition?
In a recent episode of The Vergecast, Yoshida was asked whether another game could match GTA VI’s success. GamingBolt reported his answer as: “After 15 years, maybe GTA 7, we’ll see.” He then added that Chinese companies might try to emulate or compete with GTA VI, saying, “no one should underestimate the power of these Chinese companies.” GamingBolt’s account characterized the comments as joking; the conditional wording matters.

Yoshida did not identify a Chinese studio, name a rival game, or say that a challenger is certain to emerge. Nor did he define success by sales, players, cultural reach, revenue, or any other measure. His answer is best read as speculation about what could happen over a long time horizon.

Rockstar could eventually make GTA 7
Yoshida floated a future Grand Theft Auto sequel, saying “maybe GTA 7” after 15 years. That was an illustrative possibility, not confirmation from Rockstar of a game or release schedule.

A Chinese company could compete
His other possibility was that a company from China might emulate or compete with GTA VI. He did not specify whether that would mean matching its open-world design, audience, commercial performance, or broader cultural impact. Without a named developer or title, there is no concrete competitor to compare with GTA VI.
Why is GTA VI drawing such attention?
The promotional Extended Look has attracted substantial attention, but the reported figures measure the showcase and its associated audience—not game sales or the prospects of a future rival.

These figures help explain the scale of public interest surrounding GTA VI’s marketing. They do not establish how commercially successful the game will be, much less how likely another game is to reproduce that success.

In the cited coverage, GamingBolt listed GTA VI for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a release date of November 19, 2026. Because that date is time-sensitive, check GamingBolt’s current game information or Rockstar’s official channels for the latest status.

Rockstar North co-studio head Aaron Garbut described the project’s ambition in remarks attributed to Game Informer’s cover story and reported by GamingBolt. He said the team had aimed to “over-deliver,” with detail, scope, interaction, and density all “dialled up.” That comment speaks to the developers’ ambitions for GTA VI; it is not evidence that another studio will copy or surpass it.
