AI-designed proteins have neutralized selected snake-venom toxins in laboratory tests and protected mice from lethal neurotoxin exposure. The result, published in Nature in 2025, is promising early-stage research—not a treatment available to people. The proteins target particular toxins, and human safety and effectiveness have not been established.
Could designer proteins treat deadly snake bites?
Potentially, but only as a future treatment. Vázquez Torres and colleagues used the deep-learning protein-design method RFdiffusion to create small proteins, called binders, aimed at selected three-finger toxins (3FTx) in elapid snake venoms. Their study reports that the binders neutralized toxins from all three 3FTx subfamilies in vitro. In mouse experiments, binders against neurotoxins also protected animals from lethal exposure, including in rescue tests where the binder was given after toxin injection.
The study authors summarize the finding this way: “The designed proteins effectively neutralized all three 3FTx subfamilies in vitro and protected mice from a lethal neurotoxin challenge.” The results are from laboratory and animal experiments; the study does not report treatment results in people. What do the proteins target—and what do they not cover?
Three-finger toxins are an important component of some elapid venoms, but snake venom is a mixture of different toxins. The researchers designed binders for short-chain and long-chain alpha-neurotoxins and for cytotoxins within the 3FTx family. Alpha-neurotoxins disrupt nicotinic acetylcholine receptor function and can cause life-threatening neurotoxicity; cytotoxins can damage tissue.

This is not evidence of universal protection against every snake species, every toxin, or every effect of a bite. The study tested selected toxins and venoms, and its mouse protection findings specifically concern neurotoxin challenge experiments. A binder that works against a targeted toxin cannot be assumed to neutralize other venom components.
How does this compare with conventional antivenom?
Conventional antivenoms are made from antibodies in the plasma of immunized animals and are established medical treatments. The Nature authors describe challenges that include production costs, cold-chain needs that can complicate access in remote areas, adverse reactions, and limited efficacy against some three-finger toxins. The new binders are a possible complementary approach, not a replacement shown to work better in patients.

The authors write: “Although traditional antivenoms will likely remain a therapeutic cornerstone in snakebite treatment for the immediate future, our de novo designed binders could potentially be used as fortifying agents to improve the efficacy of antivenoms.” The words “could potentially” matter: the study does not show that adding a binder improves outcomes for patients.
Is this new antivenom available to people?
No. The proteins described are research-stage candidates. The study provides no human safety or efficacy evidence and does not establish regulatory approval, clinical availability, or a treatment protocol. The mouse rescue experiments do not establish that the proteins would work in people or indicate how they should be administered in clinical care.

The World Health Organization published target product profiles on 31 December 2025 for small-molecule or engineered-antibody therapies for snakebite. These profiles describe goals for products in early development and/or clinical trials, including suitability for affected populations and appropriate safety and effectiveness. The scale of snakebite harm makes new treatment approaches worth studying. The 2025 Nature article cites figures of more than two million snakebite cases, 100,000 deaths, and 300,000 permanent disabilities annually, attributing them to its cited references. These are burden figures reported by that article, not newly verified estimates for 2026.

Protein design offers a way to create binders aimed at particular toxins. If later work establishes safety, effectiveness, suitable coverage, and practical manufacturing and delivery, such binders might complement existing antivenoms. Those are future possibilities; this study establishes a preclinical proof of concept, not a clinical solution.
