No current evidence shows that obesity can be ended forever. The headline does not identify a specific discovery, and recent reports describe several different lines of research—not one proven permanent cure. Some treatments produce substantial weight loss, while early mouse studies explore why weight returns and how that might be prevented. Those findings are scientifically promising, but they do not establish a lasting cure for people.
Which discovery does the headline mean?
The available reports do not identify one finding as the source of the claim. They cover distinct subjects: medicines that act on gut-hormone pathways, an investigational drug tested after semaglutide withdrawal, a proposed mechanism involving fat cells and asprosin, and a gut-bacterial molecule studied in mice. These studies differ in what they test and how far the evidence has progressed; they should not be combined into a single discovery or described as proof that obesity will end.
What current obesity treatments have achieved
A review published in Nature Reviews Drug Discovery on 13 May 2026 describes obesity as a chronic, relapsing disease and surveys incretin-based and multi-receptor therapies, including treatments targeting GLP-1, GIP, glucagon, and amylin receptors. It reports average weight loss above 20% in humans for certain approaches discussed in the review, alongside improvements in obesity-related conditions. That is a broad finding across reviewed therapies, not a result attributable to any one of the experimental discoveries below, a guarantee for an individual, or evidence that weight loss persists after treatment stops. Why preventing regain is a different claim from ending obesity
Weight loss during treatment and sustained results after treatment ends are separate outcomes. The 2026 review’s average weight-loss figure describes certain therapies in humans; it does not show that their effects continue indefinitely without treatment. TIX100 addresses rebound after semaglutide withdrawal, but only in a mouse model. The asprosin report proposes one possible biological explanation for regain, while the Duke report examines a different pathway in mice. None of these findings establishes durable remission in people.

For any experimental approach to support a claim of lasting benefit, human studies would need to test safety and effectiveness and assess what happens over time, including after treatment changes or stops. The reports summarized here do not provide that evidence for their experimental findings.

There is meaningful progress in obesity treatment and research into weight regain, but “could end obesity forever” goes beyond what these sources demonstrate. The headline’s intended discovery remains unidentified, and the specific experimental reports are early-stage animal or mechanistic research—not permanent cures for people. A research headline alone is not a reason to start, stop, or substitute a prescription treatment.
