Potentially—but the lateral-flow PFAS sensors described in the available studies are research devices, not established consumer home tests. A 2024 MIT-led sensor reported results for PFOA and PFBA, while a separate 2026 study reported a faster, more sensitive PFOA-focused membrane. Neither study establishes that its device is available to buy or validated for household use. For drinking-water testing with a regulatory purpose, the U.S. EPA points to laboratory methods and advises homeowners to contact their state laboratory certification program.
What a lateral-flow PFAS sensor does
A lateral-flow assay moves a liquid sample across a strip or membrane. In one research design, the strip responds to selected per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and produces a signal that can be read electrically. That may offer a route to quicker screening, but a result is meaningful only for the compounds the device detects and under the conditions in which it has been validated.
The 2024 MIT-led electrical sensor
The 2024 study describes an electrically read lateral-flow assay, or e-LFA. Its test line uses a fluorous surfactant formulation with undoped polyaniline. When perfluoroalkyl acids reach the material, acidification dopes the polyaniline and increases its conductivity; the device reads the signal through a resistivity measurement. The authors report a 104-fold conductivity enhancement for their method, with detection limits of 400 parts per trillion (ppt) for PFOA and 200 ppt for PFBA. Those figures apply to the reported analytes and study setup, not to a comprehensive PFAS panel. Read the 2024 PNAS paper.
The authors say the method “can be expanded for wide-scale environmental and at-home water testing.” That describes potential future use: the paper does not document a retail product launch or establish consumer-use validation.

The distinct 2026 membrane study
A separate 2026 study in Environmental Science & Technology reports a molecularly imprinted polyaniline film on a lateral-flow membrane. The researchers used PFOA as a template to form cavities that adsorb PFOA; its carboxylic-acid functionality locally dopes the polymer and changes conductance. The study reports a PFOA detection limit of 3.1 pM (1.3 ng/L) and a readout within 15 minutes. In tested drinking, lake, and river water samples, matrix-spike recovery was 95.0–107.1%. These findings concern that study’s separate design, not the 2024 sensor. The paper describes a research platform for on-site environmental monitoring and screening; it does not establish retail availability or consumer-use validation. Read the 2026 study.
How the two research approaches compare
| Feature | 2024 MIT-led e-LFA | 2026 imprinted membrane |
|---|---|---|
| Target compounds reported | PFOA and PFBA | PFOA |
| Reported detection limit | 400 ppt for PFOA; 200 ppt for PFBA | 3.1 pM (1.3 ng/L) for PFOA |
| Reported readout time | Not stated in the cited paper summary | Within 15 minutes |
| Water-matrix evidence | Broad household-matrix validation is not established | Matrix-spike recovery of 95.0–107.1% in tested drinking, lake, and river water samples |
| Consumer product availability | Not established | Not established |
The detection figures should not be treated as a head-to-head ranking. The studies use different designs and report results for different conditions; a lower detection limit alone does not establish that one device is better overall. Also check that units, target compound, sample conditions, and intended decision threshold match the question you need the test to answer.

What to use for drinking-water testing
For drinking-water testing with a recognized regulatory purpose, the EPA identifies Methods 533 and 537.1 as approved for monitoring under the PFAS National Primary Drinking Water Regulation and UCMR 5. Together, the methods can measure 29 PFAS in drinking water. The EPA advises homeowners to contact their state laboratory certification program to find out whether certified PFAS-analysis laboratories are available or what other testing options the state recommends. See the EPA’s PFAS drinking-water methods guidance.
The EPA notes that other methods may suit purposes outside UCMR 5 or regulatory compliance, but it has not evaluated those alternatives for those uses. Ask the state program or laboratory what method is used and whether its performance fits your purpose. Do not treat either lateral-flow research device as an EPA-approved drinking-water compliance method.

How to judge a rapid PFAS test
- Analyte coverage: Confirm which individual PFAS the method detects. The 2024 sensor reports PFOA and PFBA results; the 2026 membrane is imprinted for PFOA. Neither result supports a claim that the device detects all PFAS.
- Sensitivity and purpose: Compare a reported detection limit with the threshold or decision you care about, while matching units, analyte, and test conditions. Detection limit is not the same thing as a regulatory threshold.
- Sample and matrix validation: Look for validation in the kind of water you will test. Results in selected samples do not automatically establish performance for every household tap or plumbing condition.
- Workflow and readout: A quick readout can be useful for screening, but it does not by itself establish accuracy, full compound coverage, or suitability for compliance decisions.
- Intended use and status: Distinguish a research screening platform from a commercially available consumer kit and from an EPA-approved method for a specified regulatory purpose.
Testing is different from filtering
A water filter treats water; it does not measure PFAS. If treatment is a separate concern, the EPA says consumers can check certification-body product directories for products certified to treat PFAS such as PFOA and PFOS. Verify the exact product’s certification and the specific reduction claims rather than assuming that every filter addresses the same compounds. See the EPA’s information on certified PFAS treatment products.
