The pesto shoppers are raving about is Costco’s Kirkland Signature Imported Basil Pesto, a 22-ounce refrigerated jar. The Takeout reported a 4.7-star rating from more than 240 reviews and praise for its parmesan-forward flavor, value, and versatility. That makes it a popular pick—not a proven universal “best”: the rating and reactions are The Takeout’s reporting, not an independent taste test.

Which pesto are shoppers praising?

It is Kirkland Signature Imported Basil Pesto, Costco item 990551. Costco’s U.S. product listing identifies the jar as 22 ounces, names Genovese basil, and describes the basil as “100% Imported Italian Basil D.O.P.” The listing says to keep the pesto refrigerated. Costco’s product listing

The Takeout’s October 2, 2026 article reports that shoppers called it “The BEST premade pesto out there” and “Kirkland pesto slaps.” Those are anonymous customer reactions as quoted by the publication, rather than expert assessments. The Costco listing reviewed here does not give a complete ingredient declaration, so its basil description alone does not establish every ingredient in the recipe.

What do the reported rating and price say?

The Takeout reported a 4.7-star rating from more than 240 reviews. It also reported a $9.99 price for the 22-ounce Costco jar and compared it with a $5.99, 6.7-ounce Rao’s jar. Based on those reported prices and sizes, Kirkland comes to about $0.45 per ounce and Rao’s to about $0.90 per ounce. These are comparisons using The Takeout’s October 2, 2026 prices, not guaranteed current prices at a local store. The Takeout

The positive rating and reported value explain the enthusiasm, but neither confirms how the pesto compares in a systematic side-by-side tasting. Prices can also vary by purchase channel and location.

How to store a 22-ounce jar

Costco’s instruction is to keep the pesto refrigerated. The Takeout notes that a 22-ounce jar may be more than a small household uses quickly and suggests freezing portions in an ice cube tray, or freezing the jar and scraping out what is needed. One commenter quoted in the article described using a spoon to scrape pesto from a frozen jar; this is an anecdotal tip, not independently tested storage guidance.

What can you use it for?

The Takeout reports customer praise for the pesto’s parmesan-forward flavor and versatility. That makes it appealing to shoppers seeking a ready-made basil pesto for meals, but the available reporting does not document specific cooking tests or establish how it performs in particular recipes.
