Both U.S. Costco membership tiers include warehouse and Costco.com shopping, access to Costco Business Centers and several member services, and one eligible household card. Executive costs $65 more per year than Gold Star and adds a 2% reward on qualifying purchases, plus additional benefits on selected services and travel. Whether that upgrade pays off depends on eligible spending and the benefits you will actually use.
Gold Star vs. Executive: what each tier includes
Costco’s current U.S. comparison lists these annual fees, plus applicable tax. Fees and reward terms can change, so check Costco’s current membership page before joining or upgrading.

Costco lists both memberships as usable at its locations worldwide, but the fees and reward terms above come from U.S. pages; do not assume they apply in other countries. Household-card eligibility and local service availability are subject to Costco’s rules.
What the Executive 2% reward covers
The reward is not 2% back on every dollar a household spends. Costco says it applies to qualifying purchases by the primary member and active primary household cardholder. Most U.S. warehouse purchases qualify, but the terms exclude categories including gasoline, membership fees, food court purchases, taxes and fees, some third-party transactions, and other specified purchases. Costco Travel reward accrual is subject to separate conditions: Costco says travel must be completed, Executive status must be active when travel starts, and some travel components are excluded. Additional service or travel benefits also apply only to selected offerings and can vary by availability and terms; check the relevant listing rather than treating them as guaranteed savings.
How to decide whether Executive is worth the fee
The listed difference between the two annual fees is $65. At a 2% reward rate, $3,250 in qualifying purchases would generate $65—the amount of that fee difference—before considering exclusions, refunds, taxes, or other Executive benefits. This is arithmetic based on Costco’s listed U.S. fees and reward rate, not a Costco-published spending threshold.

- Estimate eligible purchases. Use spending by the primary member and active primary household cardholder, and leave out categories that do not qualify. Total household spending is not the same as reward-eligible spending.
- Compare the estimate with the fee difference. Divide the additional $65 annual fee by the 0.02 reward rate. If eligible spending is below $3,250, the reward alone would be less than the listed fee difference; if it is above, the reward could exceed it, subject to the program’s terms and cap.
- Assess service and travel benefits separately. If you expect to use a selected Executive benefit, consider its actual value and eligibility rather than counting it as an automatic saving.
- Check upgrade timing. Costco says purchases made before upgrading do not qualify retroactively. It says the upgrade cost may be prorated for the remaining membership term; confirm the amount and timing with Costco before proceeding.
How to use the membership benefits
Shop at Costco
Both tiers include shopping at Costco warehouses and Costco.com, as well as access to Costco Business Centers. Costco’s comparison page lists the membership access, but the pages cited here do not spell out every acceptance procedure or local rule. For account-specific questions, use Costco’s membership guidance.
Use services near you
Costco lists pharmacy, optical, hearing aid centers and gas stations among the places members can use. Costco also lists member-exclusive gas prices and selected tire-service prices, but participation and service scope can vary by location. Track and redeem the Executive reward
Costco says the primary Executive member can view a current reward estimate after signing in to a Costco.com account. Its FAQ says the reward is generally issued about two months before membership renewal. The FAQ describes redemption toward most merchandise at U.S. warehouse front-end registers; self-checkout is excluded. It also describes a way to use reward value online by purchasing a Costco Shop Card at a warehouse. These are limited redemption rules, not an unrestricted cash rebate, and current FAQ terms should be checked before relying on them.

Costco Customer Service’s March 16, 2026 article, “What is an Executive Membership?”, states: “We offer a 100% satisfaction guarantee and will cancel and refund membership fees at any time if a member is dissatisfied.” Review Costco’s current terms or contact customer service for the procedure that applies to your account.
