For most visitors, the UK’s reviewed travel advice does not say to avoid the Costa del Sol because of the recent gang shootings. The attacks reported in Málaga are serious, but the available reports do not establish that ordinary tourists face a high or measurable risk across the whole region. No trip is risk-free, so check official advice and local updates shortly before departure.
What happened in Málaga?
On 24 September 2026, SUR in English reported two high-profile shootings in Málaga city within a week. In one, a 20-year-old construction worker described as having no criminal connections was fatally shot after gunmen allegedly mistook him for a threat. In the other, a man was shot on the terrace of a restaurant at Muelle Uno, a busy waterfront area.
The report linked the incidents to organized-crime tensions and quoted Chief Superintendent Luis Esteban, a senior National Police commander for Eastern Andalucía, warning: “We have a ticking time bomb right under our feet.” That was a police commander’s warning about organized crime and resources—not a travel advisory or a quantified estimate of danger to tourists.

It also reported five fewer murders in the first half of 2026 than in the same period of 2025. These are reported police-related figures; they do not measure visitor risk.

What does UK travel advice say?
The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) Spain advice, stated as current on 10 September 2026, says: “No travel can be guaranteed safe.” The reviewed advice does not single out the Costa del Sol over the gang shootings or advise against visiting it on that basis. That is not the same as an official guarantee that a destination is safe.
The FCDO’s safety guidance focuses on practical precautions, including street crime and distraction theft. It advises visitors to keep valuables secure, check that accommodation has adequate security, take care in nightlife settings, watch their drinks, and stay with friends. In an emergency in Spain, call 112.
What the reported figures can—and cannot—tell you
| Reported information | What it means for a visitor |
|---|---|
| Five fewer murders in Málaga province in the first half of 2026 than in the first half of 2025, according to police figures reported by SUR in English in September 2026. | A year-on-year comparison for that period; it is not a tourist victimization rate and does not show that risk has been eliminated. |
| Police sources, as reported by SUR in English on 28 September 2026, said around ten planned gangland killings had been prevented on the Costa del Sol during the previous year. | An approximate figure attributed to police sources, not a publicly supplied dataset or a measure of visitors’ exposure. |
| SUR in English reported a National Police claim that all provincial homicides over the previous three years had been solved. | A police performance claim about homicide investigations, not a measure of overall crime or tourist safety. |
The coverage describes serious incidents and police action, but it does not provide a robust statistic for the probability that a visitor will be caught up in gang violence. Nor does it support a reliable town-by-town ranking of tourist risk. Two high-profile shootings cannot, by themselves, quantify the danger to someone visiting the wider Costa del Sol.

Before departure
- Check the FCDO’s Spain travel advice and recent local reporting shortly before you leave; investigations and police operations can change.
- Choose travel insurance that fits your itinerary, activities and possible emergency costs. Check the policy’s actual terms rather than assuming it covers every crime-related loss or disruption.
- Confirm that your accommodation has adequate security and plan how you will keep passports and other valuables secure.
While you are there
- Stay alert to distraction theft, particularly in busy public places, and keep valuables secure.
- In nightlife settings, keep your drink in sight and stay with friends.
- Call 112 in an emergency.
So, is the Costa del Sol safe to visit?
The best-supported answer is that the recent shootings are serious, but the reviewed UK advice does not tell visitors to avoid the Costa del Sol because of them. The incidents and reported police response are not enough to establish a visitor’s personal risk or prove that the risk has gone away. Make the decision using fresh official advice and local updates, alongside ordinary travel precautions.
