A civil lawsuit alleges that Jane Doe was sexually assaulted repeatedly in a closet at Cornell’s Chi Phi fraternity house in October 2024, and reporting says a photo of her appeared in a Snapchat group. Those allegations are not established criminal findings. Cornell conducted a separate disciplinary process, and the local criminal investigation has been reopened.
What does the lawsuit allege?
The incident at the center of the case allegedly occurred at Cornell’s Chi Phi fraternity house in October 2024. Jane Doe, the pseudonym used for the complainant in court papers, was 20 at the time, according to CBS. She reported the matter to campus police in November 2024, according to the Associated Press.
The civil complaint alleges that Doe was pressured to take drugs, became too intoxicated to consent, and was sexually assaulted repeatedly, including in a closet. These are allegations in a civil lawsuit, not findings of criminal guilt. Accounts described in reporting differ: some accused men disputed Doe’s account or characterized the sexual activity as consensual.

What was reported about the Snapchat message and photo?
The Associated Press reported that at 1:42 a.m., a fraternity member sent a Snapchat group message advertising a woman as available for sex, and that other men entered the room. CBS reported that images it obtained included a photo of Doe in the group.

What did Cornell’s disciplinary process decide?
Cornell conducted a university disciplinary investigation, which is separate from a criminal prosecution. According to the Associated Press’s account of the university panel’s findings, the panel found that Doe initially consented to sex with two men. The complaint later alleged that she had been pressured to use drugs and was too intoxicated to consent. These differing accounts should not be collapsed into a single uncontested narrative.

CBS reported that Cornell’s president said the university’s process resulted in two students being expelled and two being suspended for at least two semesters. One student had graduated before discipline could be imposed, and two were found not responsible for sexual misconduct. These are university outcomes, not criminal convictions.
The Associated Press reported that the university inquiry involved 50 interviews with 32 witnesses and 12 days of hearings. Those counts describe the scope of Cornell’s process; they do not independently prove the allegations.
