Choose a corded electric weed eater if your yard is small, an outdoor outlet is close enough, and you can route an extension cord without it getting in the way. Choose a cordless battery trimmer if you need to move freely between areas, lack convenient outlet access, or already own a compatible battery platform. Neither power-source label guarantees cutting performance: compare the specific models against your vegetation, workload, and yard layout.

Which power source fits your yard?

Your situation Better starting point What to weigh
Small yard, nearby outdoor outlet, straightforward edges Corded No battery runtime limit or charging pause, but reach depends on the outlet and extension cord.
No convenient outlet, many obstacles, or separated work areas Cordless You can move without routing a cord; battery charge and runtime become limits.
You own batteries for an outdoor-tool platform Cordless may be better value Verify that the exact battery is compatible with the trimmer; platform membership alone does not establish compatibility.
Long sessions, thick weeds, or frequent edging Compare exact models Runtime and cutting results depend on the model and conditions; edging and tougher vegetation can draw more battery power.

Consumer Reports describes corded trimmers as best suited to smaller yards and notes their extension-cord constraint. Its buying-guide text gives about a quarter-acre as a rough suitability guide for corded models, not a hard technical limit. Consumer Reports buying guidance also recommends choosing a power source around yard size and layout.

What changes in day-to-day use?

Corded: unlimited power while connected, limited reach

A corded trimmer avoids battery-runtime limits and charging breaks, but the working area is bounded by the outlet and cord. Most models require an outdoor extension cord. Consumer Reports says the tool’s own cord is usually no more than a foot long and advises using an extension cord at least 50 to 100 feet in length; treat that as general buying guidance, not a universal specification. Check the selected trimmer’s manual for the permitted cord rating, gauge, and length, and plan the route so the cord stays clear of the cutting head and your path.

Cordless: easier movement, finite runtime

A battery trimmer avoids the extension cord and is easier to carry between distant or obstructed areas. In exchange, the work period depends on the battery and operating conditions. Consumer Reports’ July 30, 2026 buying guide gives a general expectation of about 30 minutes per charge; its broader guidance says battery trimmers commonly run about 20 to 40 minutes, or longer with a second charged battery. These are category-level estimates, not promises for a particular model. EGO’s 2026 catalog lists example models with manufacturer-claimed “up to” runtimes from 30 to 60 minutes and says actual runtime varies with battery, charge, grass condition, and operating technique. WORX 20V 12" 2-in-1 Cordless String Trimmer & Electric Lawn Edger, WG163
  • 2 IN 1 TRIMMER & EDGER : Easily converts from a string trimmer to an edger lawn tool in just seconds.
  • INSTANT LINE FEED: This grass trimmer has innovative push button command feed spool system for instant line feeding. Plus, free spools for life.
  • HEAD TILTS 90°: So you can use string trimmer and edger on sloped terrain, and get to tough-to-reach places.
  • RUBBERIZED WHEELS: Support and guide the edger, giving you straighter lines and cleaner cuts.
  • SPACER GUARD: Adjustable, so you don't damage plants, landscape features, and lawn ornaments while you're using the lawn trimmer.

For a longer session, check whether the model is sold with a battery and charger, how many batteries you would need, and whether a compatible spare is available. Do not treat a second battery as included unless the listing for the exact model says so.

Does one type cut better?

Not by definition. Consumer Reports’ 2026 testing coverage says battery models are more plentiful and generally perform better than corded models in its testing, while also noting that some corded models score above average. Those are observations about the models tested, not a verdict on every cordless or corded weed eater. David Trezza, who oversees Consumer Reports string-trimmer testing, said, “Battery trimmers really rival gas in cutting performance”—a comparison with gas, not a direct cordless-versus-corded finding. Look for results on trimming, edging, clearing time, handling, and line feeding for the particular model. Match those results to your yard: light grass along a few edges is a different workload from dense weeds or repeated edging. Category labels and advertised runtime cannot substitute for model-specific results.

Compare the full cost and ownership trade-offs

  • Corded: Include an outdoor-rated extension cord in the purchase cost if you do not already have a suitable one. The required rating, gauge, and length depend on the chosen trimmer; follow its manual rather than assuming one cord specification fits every tool.
  • Cordless: Check whether the price includes a battery and charger, and account for any additional battery needed for your workload. If you already own a compatible battery, sharing it across tools may improve the value, but confirm compatibility for the exact trimmer and battery.
  • Either type: Consider handling, weight, and ease of feeding line alongside cutting and edging performance. These practical details affect how manageable the tool is over a full session.

Current street prices, stock, and exact battery compatibility are model- and retailer-specific; compare the complete kit you would actually buy rather than a bare-tool price against a bundled package.

Use a simple decision process

  1. Map the work area. Note the farthest point from an outdoor outlet, obstacles, gates, and separated patches. If cord reach or routing would interfere with the work, start with cordless models.
  2. Estimate the work session. For a brief trim, a single battery may suffice; for longer or tougher work, check model-specific runtime claims and the cost of a compatible spare. For corded work, confirm that the route and outlet are practical for the whole area.
  3. Compare complete setups. Include the extension cord for a corded tool or the required batteries and charger for a cordless one, unless you already own compatible accessories.
  4. Check model-level performance and fit. Compare trimming and edging results, line feeding, weight, and handling against your workload, not just the power-source category.
  5. Read the exact manual before use. Follow its cord and battery requirements, operating limits, and safety precautions.

Handle cords and cutting debris safely

With a corded trimmer, keep the extension cord away from the cutting area and arrange it to reduce both cutting and tripping hazards. Consumer Reports recommends eye protection and closed-toe shoes for trimmer use. Follow the chosen model’s manual for outdoor cord suitability, gauge, length, moisture restrictions, and tool-specific precautions. Consumer Reports trimmer safety guidance
