To copy local music from a Mac to a Samsung Galaxy phone, Samsung’s documented method is to connect the phone by USB, open a file-transfer app on the Mac, approve access on both devices, and drag the tracks into the phone’s music folder. You’ll need a USB cable that supports data transfer and works with both devices.
Choose the transfer route that fits your situation

Copy Mac music to your Galaxy phone over USB
These steps follow Samsung Canada’s support guide. Available screens and settings can vary by region and device model.
- Find the files on your Mac. Choose music files that are available in the Mac’s file system. A song appearing in a streaming app does not necessarily mean you have a local file you can copy.
- Install and open Android File Transfer. Samsung’s current Mac-to-Galaxy guide names this application for browsing the phone’s files from a Mac.
- Connect the phone. Unlock the Galaxy and connect it to the Mac with a USB cable that fits both devices and supports data transfer. Samsung does not specify a single connector for every Mac and Galaxy model.
- Approve access. If the Mac prompts you, allow access. On the phone, tap Allow when asked to approve the connection.
- Copy the music. In the file-transfer window, open the phone’s music directory and drag the selected tracks into it.
- Finish and check playback. Wait for the copy to complete before disconnecting the cable. Then open a music player on the phone and check that the tracks appear and play.
Samsung’s step-by-step guidance is published for devices sold in Canada; the company notes that available screens and settings may differ elsewhere. If your prompts do not match, check the support information for your Galaxy model.

Samsung’s current support page still names Android File Transfer, but the OpenMTP project describes that app as discontinued and presents OpenMTP as a macOS alternative. That discontinuation statement comes from OpenMTP, not Samsung or Google. You can investigate OpenMTP if Samsung’s named app is unavailable or fails on your setup, but it is not established here as Samsung-approved or guaranteed to work with every Mac and Galaxy combination.

Google’s general Android USB instructions explain choosing File Transfer after connecting a device, but the cited steps are for Windows. They do not establish that a Mac will show the same menu or file-transfer window.
Check DRM and file compatibility before copying a library
Samsung warns that music protected by digital rights management (DRM) may not be compatible with Galaxy devices. Some purchased tracks and downloads from streaming services may have restrictions that prevent copying or playback. Check the terms and file restrictions for the music source before transferring a large collection; a title visible in an app is not necessarily a transferable file.

Samsung’s Smart Switch support lists MP3, WMA, WAV, OGG, M4A, AAC, FLAC, MIDI, and AMR among music extensions for Smart Switch backups. This is a format list for that backup context, not a guarantee that every listed file will play in every Galaxy music app or work through every transfer route.
Use Smart Switch only when you have a backup to restore
Samsung documents Smart Switch as a way to restore music from a previous computer backup. That may suit you if the tracks are already in such a backup. The cited guidance does not describe Smart Switch as a general-purpose tool for copying arbitrary files from a Mac music folder, so use the USB file-copy route for local files when no relevant backup exists.
